HISTORY These ancient enemies of the Shi'Xul are the last survivors of the realm of Akashar, a dying world from which the Shi'Xul were exiled in the First Cycle. The Akkan-Shai City of Shadows is said to have manifested within the kingdom of Kasbenir, the first to be destroyed. Consolidating power through a series of ruthless pacifications, the Akkan-Shai became the defacto rulers of the eldriad beneath the god-emperor Almu'a. After a rule which lasted millennia, the races of Geron are said to have lead a rebellion against the Akkan-Shai which culminated in the destruction of the City of Shadows. The great city is said to have fallen into the sea, producing a tidal wave which destroyed much of Aklon and reshaped the coastlines of the surrounding regions. Many perished in this event. Different people have different names for this event, but many scholars refer to it as fall-interregnum. While some of the Akkan-Shai perished, some are said to have fled to sanctuaries with the help of loyal worshippers, where they exist in a state called 'Torpor' awaiting the return of an entity called 'Hopua', who is believed to have the power to raise the ruins of the City of Shadows from the depths of the sea. GEOGRAPHY At the lower extremeties of the Mnarian drift are a series of water drainage and movement systems which lead into the grand but decaying remains of Aklon. The monolithic and cyclopean contruction of Aklon The caverns which contain ruins have often been partially excavated and substantial in proportion, containing monolithic stone towers and deep canals which are filled from above by leaking cisterns and sewer runoff. Perhaps the most jarring difference between the surface world and the Aklonian Drifts is that the surviving statues, mosaics and reliefs are of the Akkan-Shai and creatures from their homeworld of Akashar. Statues of what would now be thought of Sleeping Gods depict them both as beneficent leaders and as conquerers of the Eldriad. For this reason, the Aklonian Drifts are often visited by cultists or those under the spell of the Dream Sickness; to those who revere the Sleeping Gods, the Aklonian Drifts are a place of great meaning. Throughout the Aklonian Drift are grim reminders of The Fall; majestic temples and stone towers reduced to heaps of rubble, rotten pallisades tangled shrine-like in the murky canals by the receding waves of the flood, and ancient traps and nascent magic lingering still from the last desperate days of the rebellion. These obstacles have prevented many scholars and adventurers from continuing their explorations, and those exploring should be wary of the half-mad whose delusions have brought them deep into this place.
