The Killer Plant

Fiona sat in a tiny grove, old trees surrounded her that were even older then she was. She was a half forest gnome, her mom was a gnome and her dad human. Her family had lived in this forest hundreds if not thousands of years. Moss hung down the sides and various vines with flowers. There was a tiny pond that the water stayed clean all year from some underground stream, a couple fish sometimes were seen in it. Fiona suspected a underground cave system. The grove wasn't affected by the changing of the forest ecosystem. No one knew why, not even the gnomes. Fiona didn't even know why the grove wasn't affected by it, she had found it a few decades ago.

Various plants she used in her apothecary, Woodland Wanderers, grew here and she also had a garden. Fiona heard voices coming from outside the grove, they were talking of a plant with gigantic leaves with a beautiful orange flower that had various red dots on it. They were talking of grand adventures and what type of plant it must be and how something so pretty must be helpful.

"Cacus!" Fiona cursed in Latin as she got up, almost tripping as she did so. The gnome dove out of the grove north of the adventurers, for they wouldn't see where she came from.

"Hey stutissima!" Fiona yelled at them. Both turned to her, jaws slacked either from confusion with the Latin and English combined.

"Stultissima?" One with sandy hair like her own questioned, they had bright blue eyes though instead of her bright green, and looked rather young. They were also taller then her, being half-human gave her more height but not much. They seemed to be human.

"You idiots!" Fiona repeated in English this time rolling her eyes using the closest translation. She kept getting closer, "Get away from it! That plant well kill you!"

"But it's so pretty?" The other one said, they had long black hair. Fiona could see points on the ear, and thought it had to be an elf. Also looked young but elf ages on the outside, like hers, were decieving. That one had a eye color similar to hers. She was now within arm lengths of them.

"Of course it is! That's how it lures you in! Its called Large Death Leaf, the leaves kill you within minutes after you touch it." Fiona explained throwing her arms up in the air. She was staying in between them and the plant still. The adventurers jaws dropped again, they looked at each other then the plant then her in turn and did this twice. Both looking very confused.

"Why in the gods name are you out here?"

"I'm Gadell and this is my brother in arms and blood, Oakland." The one with black hair said. It was Fiona's turned to be confused looking between them, "I'm an forest elf and wanted to learn the ways of the eternity forest like my ancestors

"I, for the record, didn't want to come." Oakland piped up and Gadell glared.

"Adopted brother I should add."

Oakland rolled his eyes, "Yeah and you only bring it up when I'm right about something and you're mad."

"I do..."

"How old are you two?" Fiona broke in before the bickering could continue any longer.

"We're 17." The boys said proudly and Fiona sighed.

"Are you from Mossley?" Fiona asked.

"Ye.." Gadell shoved an elbow in Oakland ribs before he could finish, Oakland glared.

"Well its time to go an adventure alright. Back to Mossley to explain to your parents why the town crazy found you in the woods." Fiona smirked. Recognition lit their faces for the first time with who she was. "If you protest this, you should now realize I'm not afraid to knock you both you out and portal you into the forest sages office."

"Yes ma'am we'll come back with you." Gadell and Oakland both stuttered.

"Don't call me ma'am, I'd rather be called the town crazy. Just call me Fiona. Let's get going."

Both boys looked at each other with hesitation even though they said they'd go back. She knew they wanted to prove themselves. Fiona turned away and started walking, she looked over her shoulder and added, "Come on now, or do you want to be stuck here when the ecosystems shift?"

A look of pure fear appeared on both their faces and was gone within seconds. They at least had sense with this.
