City of Denholm

Denholm, also known as the Shackled City, is a western city serving as the capital of the Jarldom of Denmoore. It is on the southern edge of the Denmoore Highlands west of the River Maeve, and north of Lake Loden.   It is a part of the "Five Great Cities" of Enther along with Norheim, Rosegard, Kirkminster and the cpaital Montheus.

History

The area of Denholm was once inhabited by a barbarian people, though the histories are unclear on who these people where. Once the Corphyians enslaved the people of this area their history was lost, much like most of human history. Snippets of history through scrolls and tomes suggest the people in this area were a violent folk, prone to merciless destruction.   Denholm was founded on the flat lands of Denmoore in 6 ABA, named for its positioning in the valleys under the Highlands. The land was seemingly untouched by the Corypheans and the settlers where able to begin quarrying. The quarries of Denholm provided Montheus with the stone it needed to build its mighty walls and buildings in return for gold and manpower.   After a small rebellion in Denholm and a failed assassination attempt on an emissary from the capital serving as lord, it was decided that lordship for the city would need to be granted from within the cities’ most trusted men. As the largest quarrying city, Denholm would become incredibly wealthy and a vicious competition between quarries within the city allegedly resulting in the deaths of more than half the workers at the time. A man named Otto was finally chosen after his son married the a distant cousin of the king. Lord Otto and his family would go on to serve as Lord of Denholm for the next three generations and push for the expansion of the roads connecting the most powerful cities in the kingdom, a move which awarded them a lot of influence when they would call on their allies in future.   By 20 ABA Denholm was one of the mightiest cities in the kingdom, with nearly a million people living and working in the city, producing stone, iron and steel. It was the second biggest city after Montheus and the Ottosons where considered as the second most powerful family in the kingdom. was guarded by a great force, more commonly known as The Grey Guard.   During Lord Ufltor’s uprising, Denholm’s forces was hindered by a commoner uprising. Three knights, including Lord Ulftor’s son and their men at arms into the mines the revolt before it spread, but they mysteriously vanished before reaching the mines. In the wake of the reunification of the kingdom by King Pius, Denmoore’s borders receded reducing some of its power. Numerous lesser lords of the new jarldom tried to consolidate their power into a single force hellbent on preventing the reunification by attempting to take control of the city, but Denholm held out for almost a decade. The lesser lords were finally defeated after their assassination of one of their own leading to massive infighting. Denholm’s own forces along with the reinforcements from the capital managed to capatalise on the infighting and reduce their forces into retreat. The lesser lords were hanged and left presented in the open from The Shackles.
