Montheus

Montheus, the sprawling metropolis and capital of the Kingdom of Enther, holds the distinction of being both the largest city within the kingdom and its political, religious, and economic hub. This illustrious city's origins can be traced back to the historic meeting point where Matheus, a revered hero and the kingdom's first monarch, united with his loyal followers in preparation for their war against the Corphyians. What was once a landscape dominated by rolling hills and dense forests has since evolved into a thriving center of civilization on the western edge of the continent. The population of Montheus, which ordinarily hovers around two million residents, experiences significant fluctuations during times of conflict when an influx of refugees inundates the city. Geographically, Montheus is strategically positioned at the confluence of the smaller tributaries of the Nethermore River, where it merges with the vast expanse of the Wicked Sea, to the south of the Hinterlands. A network of major roads radiates from the capital, connecting it to the various jarldoms within the kingdom.   The Winter Road stretches northward, traversing the Golden Crossing and extending all the way to Norheim in the Jarldom of Norshire, while also reaching westward to the Highlands. The Nethermore Road leads eastward through the Jarldom of Rosinhill, connecting Montheus to Roseguard, Weatherton, and Shimmerton. Additionally, the Grey Road crosses the Belt region and heads west, providing access to Denholm and Dorendale in the Jarldom of Denmoore. The bustling port of Montheus welcomes ships from all major cities in Agiea, historically diminishing the trade in nearby Weatherton as Montheus gradually ascended to become the primary trade center of the region.   Perched atop a grand hill known as the High Hill, Montheus boasts several notable landmarks. The True Fort, an initially modest earth-and-timber fortification, was first constructed during the early days of Matheus' great war campaign. Over the years, it expanded, eventually encompassing the ruins at its base. This marked the genesis of Montheus Castle, a formidable fortress, and the magnificent Andreal Palace, which proudly looms over the city, commanding a breathtaking view of the docks from its prominent cliffside location.

Demographics

Mostly native Enther humans, with a handful of fairfolk residents.

Government

As the Capital of Enther Montheus hosts as the seat of the power of the kingdom. Like the rest of Enther, the capital is subject to the harsh taxes but there are exemptions for the Lords and Lady's of high town.

Defences

Montheus is surrounded by a great armed wall, known as Dorian's Wall topped with large ballista's manned by city guards. The walls themselves are extremley durable, thick and tall meaning they would be difficulty to breach through and the only way into the city would be through one of the three gates, or alternatively through the rear end of the docks.   A river surrounded Montheus around and the only crossing are the Golden Crossing and the Nethermore Crossing, which are manned by a small force each. The Golden Crossing has itself been a hotbed for battles during rebellions, invasions and uprisings.

Industry & Trade

As the richest city in Enther and the capital, Montheus is a hotbed for trade. Ships dock daily from all over Mirth, bringing their wares to the capital. However the surrounding farmlands within the Golden Crossing do not produce enough food to keep the city fed so trading and taxes from the other cities allows Montheus to remain fed, at least in the royal and high quarters.

Districts

When one enters Montheus through any of its four gates, which punctuate the city walls, they find themselves in the heart of Montheus' Old Town. Nestled at the base of the city's commanding hill, Old Town is a bustling district teeming with markets, inns, and taverns, providing ample diversions for the city's common inhabitants. Beneath the warmth of the southern sun, the markets typically bustle with activity daily, drawing crowds from nearby villages who seek to procure various goods and supplies. However, Old Town harbors a darker reputation as well. Particularly after nightfall, it can become treacherous to traverse its alleys and streets.   Climbing the hill, one's gaze is drawn to the radiant elegance of High Town, enclosed by its own protective walls. Distinguished by its pristine white buildings adorned with emerald roofs, High Town seems to gleam under the bright sun. Dominating the skyline are the imposing structures of Montheus Cathedral, The Mages Guild, and the Ivory Library, which loom even larger than the grand stately homes and mansions that grace the area. High Town is the domain of Montheus' prosperous elite, consisting predominantly of lords, ladies, knights, and affluent merchants, who regard the denizens of Old Town as commoners.   The docks, strategically positioned between Old Town and High Town, serve as the pivotal hub for maritime trade. Carved into the hillside and descending to a sizable dock below, monumental staircases facilitate access between the docks and both public districts. Here, traders from across the realm of Mirth converge to import their goods into the capital, hoping to secure their fortunes. Amidst the bustling trading galleys and barges, the imposing presence of the Royal Armada stands vigilant, prepared to counter any threats that may emerge from the distant seas.   Perched atop the entirety of Montheus, casting a watchful eye upon the city, is the Montheus Royal Quarter. This exclusive enclave serves as the residence of the reigning monarch of Enther, from which they govern the kingdom. Encircled by its own formidable fortifications, the Royal Quarters grant access only to those individuals invited by the crown through its solitary gate. Within this prestigious precinct, the Andreal Palace serves as the primary residence for the Royal Family, while the rest of the population resides within the confines of the Great Keep.

History

In the wake of the The War for Aigea after the coronation of King Matheus and Queen Andrea the old southern kingdom of men was ordered to be rebuilt. There atop a great hill Montheus was built. The ancient southern ruin had been one of the final kingdoms to fall to the Enthermen. The skeletons of the ruins were used to rebuild the city at an alarming rate, much to the detriment to the thousands which perished during the construction.

Geography

Montheus is a top a large cliff which looks out upon the Black Sea. Montheus Old Town and the city walls start at the base of the cliffe, with the High Town walls being further up and the Royal quarter being atop the cliff. The docks are situated at the base of the cliff where it meets the sea.
