The STORMTHAER line is one of the oldest vassals and allies of the DAMANEOS—their lords and masters since the family was first granted lands and title in -79BT. The Stormthaer family has been loyal to the line of Damaneos for over a century. The bloodline has suffered its failures during the years but, more often than not, they are known for their valor and stubborn loyalty to their liege.
Over time, this loyalty has been rewarded again and again, such that the STORMTHAER line and its descendants are Bannerlords for the Thornlands. Situated with lands on the southern coast of the THORNLANDS, this vassal and their subordinate vassals were traditionally tasked with watching for overseas raiders and the like. Once THORNS stepped away from RHONE, this family, its vassals and neighbors have borne the brunt of countering the actions of the Rhone lords and retainers to the east.
STORMTHAER holds a KAR-ITHILIN-SEL, a coastal Keep that rests on the western border against the Rhonish nobles who have been quarreling and fighting with THORNS. Known by various names, it is a salt-encrusted keep that overlooks the coast and is built on the foundations of an old Aenari hillfort known as “Throne of Storms”. It is said that, on nights of great turbulence, one can venture into the caves where the first STORMTHAER sheltered and obtain insight or an epiphany into what can be accomplished in that person’s lifetime. It is said that it is never easy but the mere vision and knowledge of it grant a strength of purpose.
They have nearly six thousand people under their protection. As such, they have four vassal knights that serve alongside or in lieu of the family head.
History
It is local legend that the STORMTHAER family has existed in the shadow of the old Kar-Ithilin, a fort of ancient and enigmatic origin, since the days of Time Immemorial. The family is alleged to have been known even in the days of RHUANON for their exploits in war, rivalry and revelry. This legend is, of course, heard best in the STORMTHAER’s halls by a bard. It is said that in olden times a member of the bloodline was dashed upon the rocks of the old fort’s foundations along the Sea of Winds and huddled in its shattered rocks for days and nights—an experience that changed the man and his descendants forever.
It is this very legend that is often looked at when one of the STORMTHAER invariably go too far in their stubbornness and their loyalty. A streak of illogical and even distempered thinking sometimes appears in the heirs of STORMTHAER that drives them to extremes that others would credit to madness or the moon’s bale influence. In battle, the STORMTHAER line is known for both its competence and the tendency for a descendants to occasionally go berserk in the red rage of combat. These men have been mad dog killers more often than not—a rabid dog, leashed only by their loyalty—such that most folk avoid them on the field.
