The Silver Guard
The Silver Guard are the pinnacle of the Torvahlan military, and they guard the palace in the capital city of Torvahlis. These soldiers rarely leave the capital, and even when they do it is only done by a few members to operate as commanders of troops outside the Silver Guard during times of war, or when specifically ordered by King Lorvahn to undertake a quest on behalf of the nation. To serve in the Silver Guard is an aspiration for many of those within the Torvahlan military, and to do so requires years of loyal service and no small number of accomplishments during that time. The Silver Guard numbers one hundred soldiers, all of which display a mastery of one or more methods of combat, with martial combatants and spellcasters alike among their number. First and foremost, the Silver Guard's role is to safeguard the royal family. To that end, they will unflinchingly lay down their life in defense of their sovereign.
The length of one’s service within the Silver Guard is dependent on their ability to display the skills necessary to maintain their position, and every three years the members of the Silver Guard compete in order to demonstrate their skills in a competition called the Tournament of Silver, though a member is only required to participate once every six years This is considered a celebratory event more than a cutthroat one, and it is not uncommon for crowds to gather in order to witness the later rounds of the tournament. Members of the military who wish to apply for promotion into the Silver Guard must present a recommendation from someone within the Torvahlan nobility or the Silver Guard itself.
