Saeralla, the Goddess of Knowledge (sae-RAH-lah)

Saeralla is the Goddess of Knowledge, Learning, Fate, and one of the twin Gods of Magic.   Saeralla was the deity that, when the gods entered the Emergent Plane, immediately foresaw saw the danger of the wild and erratic magic her twin brother had taken from the dragons. Because of this, while the other gods turned their focus to their own interests, Saeralla set to work constructing The Script, the magical latticework that provides structure to the magic of the world, though some believe Alleniel, the Goddess of Order, aided Saeralla in this.   To delegate the upkeep of The Script's integrity, Saeralla brought forth the High Elves into the Emergent Plane, and this divinely-dictated purpose is a significant contributor to the notorious haughtiness of the High Elves. Shortly after the establishment of the script, Saeralla's twin brother, The Lord of Games, took issue with his sister removing all the "fun" from magic, and taught the mortal races how to manipulate this framework to alter reality, and thus the joint effort of both gods created "Magic" as it is understood today.   Worship of Saeralla is unusual among the Major Gods. While it is fairly common among scholar, philosophers, or those who simply feel lost, it is debatable whether it is "worship" in the traditional sense. Saeralla, being the Goddess of Knowledge and Learning, looks favorably upon those who pursue these concepts. As such, depending on one's religious learning, the very acts of education, self-reflection, and philosophy are a form of worship, or entirely secular. While a worshipper of Saeralla might beseech her for divine insight into a difficult problem, it seems as though she cares little whether an individual is devoted to her, and blesses followers and non-followers alike with sparks of genius.   This attitude toward the worship of Saeralla is why the most prominent temples dedicated to her usually function as schools, academic focal points for the study of the mundane, the philosophical, and the arcane. The Tower of the Moon in Torvahl is one such prominent example, and serves as both a haven and place of refinement for those who wish to dedicate their lives to the pursuit of knowledge. It should come as no surprise then that she is most closely associated with Wizards, and even if they have no special reverence for Saeralla as a deity, most Wizards have at least a respect for her, as her existence is a known truth and she embodies what many wizards aspire to.   While she is one of the gods more likely to bless mortals with her favor, her interaction with the Emergent Plane seems strangely limited. It is a common belief that Saeralla's Infinite Library is housed within the Moon, the light of her magical lamps illuminating the night. Some mortals have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of entering her library, but such accomplishments are few, and it's unclear whether any have been successful. As one might imagine, an individual who pursues knowledge fervently would be loathe to leave a realm that, according to the stories, contains all knowledge.   Saeralla's direct interactions with mortals seems to have changed recently. Her divinely-bestowed sparks of brilliance are fewer and farther between, and in some cases seem to shatter the minds of those who she blesses, rendering them mad. The Tower of the Moon in particular has been researching this phenomenon, as the Goddess herself has left her followers in the dark. Some view this as a divine test, others as punishment, others as an omen. Regardless of their beliefs, the fact remains that something about the Goddess of Knowledge seems to have changed, or at least how she views mortals, and the answer as to "why" is a frequently highlighted question among the highly educated.

History

The relationship between the twin Gods of Magic is a complicated one   While the stories available that describe interactions between the two seem to generally imply some kind of mutual respect, there is commonly known point of contention.   Saeralla, the Goddess of Knowledge, supposedly knows everything. Everything, that is, except for one crucial piece of information that has eluded her since time immemorial: The true name of her brother.   It is believed that because of this, Saeralla stays locked in her Infinite Library, endless trying to discover this singular piece of knowledge hidden from her. Meanwhile, the Lord of Games toys with her by allowing her to repeatedly believe she's getting close before revealing that she's far from it.
