Vampires - A Warning

- Excerpt from the works of a Junior Scribe attached to the Mentor's Keep-

The term vampire is used to denote a form of intelligent humanoid Undead who sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others.

Vampirism is infectious - with those afflicted able to pass on their curse by spreading the disease they carry known as Porphyric Hemophilia. Any combat or interaction with a vampire carries with it the small chance of infection - as the vampire may claw, bite, or spit in defence of their pitiable lives. If infected, you will know it by the onset of a headache, pale skin, and chills within 6 hours of contamination.

It is imperative that any infected seek a healer as soon as possible. Porphyric Hemophilia is easily curable within the first 3 days of the infection - but has a lethality rate of 100% past this point. Those who die while carrying the disease will rise again as a Vampire.

Vampires may hunt as individuals or in small packs. But any feigning of human empathy is an illusion designed to ensnare their victims. A Vampire cannot be reasoned with. Their mere existence is a threat to the civilizing project of Empire.

The Kingdom of Daggerfall has for many centuries been free of any large scale Vampiric presence. Though the occasional outbreak has occurred, and lone hunters are found out and eliminated from time to time, these events have grown less common in recent decades, owing to the efforts of vampire-hunters, the faith, and the Legion.

Recent hearsay suggests that some nest of Vampires may have established itself in the old Direnni ruins of Anrovor along the coast. While the Senior Mentor has dedicated a small number of Knights to investigate the claims - it is far more likely to have been little more than an encounter with a raving lunatic or madman. The idea that a nest of Vampires could have been regularly predating on the local population under the nose of the authorities is ridiculous at face value, and may indeed be intentionally divisive.

Whatever the truth of it, the Knights Mentor will rout it out.
