Voidheart

The voidheart are counterparts to the Startouched, their duskborn twins. Unlike the startouched, who warded themselves against the influences of the shadow dimension, the voidheart chose to embrace the shadow dimension, which resulted in physical, mental, and magical changes. The voidheart have a number of strange mutations that rise every so often, which are considered normal by them. These include bat wings instead of eyebrows, spiked tails, and devil horns. In general, the voidheart have skin just as pale as the startouched, but instead of radiating light, they cast a magical darkness around them. This darkness isn't really visible on the shadow dimension, but it is quite useful for countering the startouched's abilities. Their eyes are typically red, blue, or purple depending on the region they live in. The voidheart have a very individualistic culture which relies heavily on their powerful magical abilities. Thanks to their centuries-long exposure to the radiation of the shadow dimension, they have developed a resistance to magical radiation of all types, though not enough to go near the center of the irradiated zone.

Voidheart from different regions tend to have different mutations, often but not always due to sexual and/or magical selection.

  • The Witches of Ah Caul have developed a female only society which reproduces entirely through the use of magical ceremonies. They also have sharp teeth. Living in the shattered lowlands around the Ah Caul swamps, they are known as excellent diviners and fearsome foes, having killed at least 3 devil lords who attempted to seize their lands and enslave them. They are also violently misandrist but only within their lands (they will help out men if it suits them but any man who has harmed a woman would be unwise to enter the swamps) (yes I know misandry isn't hating men for valid reasons they're still misandrist too, just worse to guys who actually deserve it).
  • The bat people of [tbd] have developed actual working bat wings which they use to raid the plains from their mountain roosts.
  • idk more probably
