Saerai

The Saerai, or "northern Telrai" can be described as straddling the inland seas and oceans separating Telgren and Ærellion. Having originated from Saurai exploring north, they quickly found a niche in the northern seas. Dominating the islands of the region and settling along the tribal-controlled coastlines, they had a far easier time settling states than their southern brethren. Competing with the gnomes for trade from far-off Voltheim, many of these states amassed lucrative amounts of wealth. Although the rise of the Teltars proved disastrous for many of the Saerai on the Ærellion side, for others it allowed them to further monopolize trade.
The Saerai are usually divided into four different groups; the Autuai, Saoai, Atiai, and Stepai. Autuai are the Telrai living in Autuavao, who have long battled against the Orentesh for control of the region in which they dwell. The Autuavao serve as the entrance to the northern lands of mainland Telgren for most Telrai merchants. Close by, living on islands are the Saoai, who live on both sides of the strait, along the western coast of Ærellion and eastern coast of Telgren. They are similar to the Autuai for the most part, but don't have the same warlike necessities and can focus more on trade competition. Saoai control the main strait between the northern and southern seas, enhancing their cultural reach. Further northern and eastern islands are inhabited by the Aitai, who have much lower population densities and control most of the arctic sea commerce. For many years they have slowly been expanding further into the northn seas, and may soon be equipped to conquer more settled islands. Lastly, the Stepai live on mainland Ærellion's steppes. Forced to deal with centaur raids for many years following the rises and collapses of the Teltars and other lesser clans, they have learned important fortification techniques in order to defend their lands. Their monopoly on goods from the interior of Ærellion has greatly declined since the Teltar dominance was achieved, opening up commercial ventures for other nations.. The divergent group of Harmaashian Telrai were once Saoai, but were forced into the interior by the Teltars.
