The Raid On The Brotherhood's Camp

The Raid On The Brotherhood's Camp is an important side story. Each faction will have their own set of quests to get through in order to earn their loyalty to Grorr's mission.    Evangeline, The First Sword of the Thorn, seeks out Medved's help. He had previously offered to help find the enemy camp, and to help exterminate their hobgoblin problem. She seeks him out and requests his help in order to end her tireless nights of defending their home camp.

Plot points/Scenes

The Call To Arms

On the second night of the two camps being merged, Evangeline seeks out Medved and asks him if he will still follow through on his offer help the trio fight off the hunting party that is starting to become a real problem. What started out as petty theft had gotten out of control. The night before they had caught a couple of hobgoblins planting dynamite near some horse stables. Luckily, they were able to put out the dynamite in time before it killed the horses and destroyed the makeshift stable structure.

Gathering The Party

Medved has to check with the rest of the party if they are willing to partake in the mission to help locate the camp. Of course they will all be willing to. They'll need to gear up, along with purchasing the ingredients needed for a special kind of poison. The plan had a couple of steps behind it. The poison was prep for the second step.
The first objective in the plan goes as follows: identify and locate any saboteurs sneaking into the camp. These targets are labeled as kill on sight. They are not to be allowed to escape due to the fear that they might pretend to run away and return to their intended business.   The battle starts when six goblins are thrown up on to the roof tops. The hobgoblins that threw them run through the streets, attempting to avoid the other party members. Their attempts, however, are thwarted one way or another.   The main objective of Phase 1 is to intercept the saboteurs and stop them from causing any trouble.

The Next Day: Meeting Evangeline's Troops

The next day, the party is required to report for duty. The second step of the plan was to commence upon daybreak. The party had special permission to take place on this mission, especially with Grorr agreeing to help the Brotherhood with a few items on their agenda before they join the journey to build up an army.   Part 2 of the plan consisted of the group searching for the Heathen's camp. Even with the recent executions, it was not easy to dismiss the hunting parties' numbers as thinning out. They couldn't afford to make any assumptions. They were to track and find the camp that the Heathen's were operating out of so that they could perform their own acts of sabotoge. That's what the poison was intended for.   When they meet up with Evangeline, she introduces the party to the rest of the troop that she commanded. Othorion Nerikas, Keryth Carmoira and Ruvyn Qinra seemed to be very mild mannered young men upon first glance. They seemed positive and cheery and ready to go add to the war efforts. They were still all disgraced mercenaries, after all. It wouldn't be wise to let your guard down around any of these people.

Step 2: To Sabotoge

The players are each given two bombs along with their vials of poison. There are hunters crawling all over the camp, but nightfall is the player's secret weapon. This is a stealth based mission, and the players are to be rewarded for both stealth kills and successful kills.   This mission will have to be planned and scened out perfectly. You'll have to know where the hobgoblins are at all times, and you'll need to understand how they're goinig to move and what behaviors they'll be doing. If bodies are discovered, there will have to be a table to decide which direction the guards who find the body go, or if they have a different type of reaction.
As the sabotoge goes on, something seems to be off. Glulvad Chomp, Ovlec Twitch and various other hunters who have been close to or have recieved promotions into official military positions are being hunted throughout the camp. A mutiny has begun, and death has begun to spread throughout the camp.     Operation outcomes A. The fires set the chaotic camp alight. The camp is completely destroyed and a magnitude of damage is dealt to the hunters' numbers. There is a showdown with The Behemoth, but Ruzak survives to lead his own personal scourge against the Brotherhood's camp. (Perfect ending) B. The party is caught and has to fight their way to a retreat, which causes the siege to go on as planned. C. The sabotoge goes swimmingly, killing and weakening many hunters in the camp.

The Next Day

After the night of the sabotoge the party comes back to camp. At breakfast they overhear Othorion, Keryth and Ruvyn talking about how when word gets back to Gorr and Sir Berran about the orchestrated mission, the party and Evangeline and her boy toys will get the credit because they executed the sabotoge. There could be promotion, treasure or even political significance.   Breakfast consists of sausages, eggs (overeasy) and boiled ettercap websacs - which, when boiled, the silk inside becomes almost a noodle-like consistency and the walls of the sacs act as a meat based protein. Its highly nutritious. Evangeline, Hurin and Istari join the party for breakfast and congradulate them on the fantastic victory.   "I have no doubt that the hunters - or whats left of them, will strike today. Nobody can strike that hard and not invoke the wrath of the man they've scorned. The choas we caused last night begs for retaliation. We have to warn everybody that the attack is coming today, most likely earlier than we had anticipated."

Warning the Camp

As the party heads out to warn members of the camp, they quickly realize that people already know about the incoming attack. Most don't believe the news, others are frantically preparing for the battle. They're told that the three drunks have already told warned them, and that they're off on a fools errand.    The group proceeds to seek out Grorr and Sir Berran, but end up being cornered in an armor tent. Othorion, Keryth and Ruvyn hold the party at sword and bow point blank, telling them that they will not allow the "outsiders" to take the praise for accomplishmets clearly achieved by the Thorn. As the standoff happens, Istari enters the tent and finds himself with an arrow in the stomach.    Main Objective: Fight Othorion, Keryth and Ruvyn Secondary Objective: Save, protect and air Istari   When Othorion dies, the siege on the camp begins. Ruvyn goes for a slash, but a hobgoblin blade cuts through the tent and severs his arm from its socket, causing Ruvyn to fall down on his face.

Themes

Stealth is the name of the game for the most part. When we aren't taking care of the main mission, the espionage is replaced with a few tender moments between characters, there is betrayal and dishonour. There is to be a feeling of a looming battle that could happen at any time.

Structure

Exposition

The Night of the Sabotoge

There was nothing calm about tonight. While chaos breaks out behind the scenes, trouble was brewing front and center. As you and (Istari or Hurin) hide watching The Behemoth and Ruzak as they lead Onkal into the Bugbear tent. (Istari or Hurin) raises their bow, preparing an arrow aimed at Ruzak's head. He exhales deeply and a bead of sweat drops from his brow. His gaze softens as the three begin to converse among themselves.   "You're indocrinating my men," Ruzak growled as he posted both arms against the wooden table in the corner of the room. "Why do you feel you can promote my men to military ranks?"   The Bugbear huffs and puffs through his muzzle. His beady black eyes bounce between the three men. He doesn't seem to understand what's being said or what's happening in front of him. His unlocked primal instincts have rendered his language skills completely barred. There is no possible way he could understand even simple Goblin speak. He's seen more conversations in this tent than he had ever been part of.   "You are property of the Free Heathens. You are little more than glorified slaves to the crown." Onkal spoke with malice dripping from his maw. His voice came from the highest of mountains, talking down to the gawkers below.   Ruzak slammed his fist against the table, and Zovlor folded his arms over his chest, taking a few steps toward the savage beast before him. "You know that's not what we wanted to hear." The Behemoth said softly.   "What? Did you expect me to apologize and revoke all promotion?"   "That's exactly what we wanted." Ruzak said as he turned around. His eyes found Zovlor, and he slowly nodded. "We wanted you to swear you'd leave us to our own devices. You could have enjoyed the camp life; let me and my men conduct the siege and enjoy a little break from the fighting. But you want to do things the hard way."   Onkal reached for his short sword as Ruzak stepped forward. In less than the blink of an eye, a chain flung itself from Ruzak's meaty hand, wrapping around the handle and attaching to the pommel with a claw-like hook attachment at the end of the chain. The sword clattered to the ground and Ruzak took two steps forward, cocking his body to the side and spinning into the momentum of a roundhouse kick. Onkal's jaw cracked upon impact.   There was a loud thump as Onkal fell to the ground. His screams were muffled as he held his face in his hands. Ruzak stomped on the man's chest, holding his foot against him to pin him against the ground. "Your life could have been so much easier, but instead you decided to end it early."   Zovlor the Behemoth had already unshackled the Bugbear's arms and legs. With that final one-liner, Zovlor peeled the muzzle off. Instantly, the beast cocked his arms back and threw his head to the sky. He snorted in a breath of air and released a blood curdling cry. There is nothing more bone shaking than a starved, hungry Bugbear.   The beast lunged forward causing Ruzak to remove his foot from Onkal's chest. The man flopped backwards, but the Bugbear was already on him. Razor sharp claws tore away at seemingly fragile flesh. What was seen as tough and hard to pierce by most was displayed to be easy work for such a creature. Onkal tried to strike his way to safety, but that just caused the creature to wrap its claws around his arm, tearing out the veigns in his arm with yellowed teeth. Onkal's limbs began to thrash violently as the monster swiftly changed his target to the man's face. Soon, what was once the man's face had been caved in, turned into a bowl for the Bugbear to reach into as he scooped out each mouth full.

Purging The Military

Remember that looming feeling that something was wrong? That small little ache in the pit of your stomach that constantly snags at your attention? It was back and completely boiling over.    First came the sound of comotion. It was out of seeing range, but it was easy to tell lthat something was going on. There were the sounds of a muffled struggle, and then came the slice. The sounds of blade slidding against flesh was accented by a wet splattering sound, and followed by a gurlge. The audible thump of a body hitting the ground that was all too familiar to the common soldier range through with an atmospheric hum.    Then, came the sounds of a horn and a loud beat coming from multiple sets of war drums. Each drum was just slightly off with each other, creating an ugly melody that only a green skin could enjoy. Suddenly groups of hobgoblins surged throughout the camp bearing torches and weapons of every kind. They entered tents just as much as they approached soldiers on guard.    A hobgoblin who had just recently been signed over to the military had turned from his camp fire near his tent. He attempted to run, but found himself cornered by four of his brethren. Two of them held him down, while the other two took turns stabbing him to death with their swords. A very dishonorable way to die.    All throughout the camp, units were getting slaughtered. One man, seen to be one of the physically weaker of the group, was dragged over to face the bug bear. He was torn apart limb from limb, and then had his stomach torn apart. Others were hung, beheaded, stabbed in the back and burned alive. This was no quiet night. No. This was a culling.

Conflict

Act I: Evangeline and her troop are getting more alarmed than sick of having to identify and thwart sabatoge attempts. They've stayed vigilant but attempted to get people on their side, but nobody wants to listen.    Act II: There is a massive power struggle in the Heathen's hunting party. The discourse is a side story meant to breathe life into the world and help with storytelling. Mainly intended to put meat on the plot's bones.   Act III: The other members of Evangeline's troop are jealous of the party of outsiders. They intend to silence them and end up wounding Istari.
