The Brotherhood of the Thorn
There's a racial stereotype that all elves - especially the high elves - were perfect and could do no wrong. They were said to be snoody and usually all wealthy. That isn't the case, however. Like all people, elves have disgracful members of their race.
The Brotherhood of the Thorn was established in order to give the misfits somewhere to go. The exiled were instantly cast out from their people and socially killed among the elven people. Even their families are forced to denounce and disown them. They practically didn't exist. Their memory died. Some were even written into having tragic deaths into history books, never to have their names officially documented ever again.
Thieves, cheaters, murderers, they are all accepted and turned into mercenaries. Pleny of soldiers are recruited, but this is a home for even the lowest of criminal. Most of those without formal training were put through extensive work on their physical and magical abilities, as well as their mental capabilities. They were accepted with open arms and rewarded every day for their hard work.
