The Calmira

The Calmira is a tempestuous area of the planet Berdis. This region is notorious for turbulent weather that churns massive waves and ceaseless storms. At the heart of the maelstrom sits a small, rocky island simply named “Calmira Island”, upon which waves constantly crash. It lies at the northern pole of the planet.   Exploring the area is excessively perilous. Virtually no aircraft can safely approach due to the extremely high winds, whose direction is constantly changing. The near constant lighting provides another obvious deterrent. Approaching by sea is equally challenging due to the vicious waves. Surprisingly, underwater is the most dangerous. Strong crosscurrents and sharp underwater peaks rising from the ocean floor have claimed hundreds of lives by people trying to approach through the underwater canyons. Finally, there are immense electro-magnetic forces in the pole that interfere with essentially all electronic devices.   For centuries, the area was simply avoided due to the dangers. The planet is mostly water with long continents that run north to south. It was thought that The Calmira was simply the result of an interplay of the tides, driven by Berdis' 3 moons and planetary rotation. It was believe the oceanic currents would collide together, resulting in the infamous weather. Recently, however, scientists were able to get a series of highly reinforced probes through the area and collect an unprecedented series of data. They concluded that instead of being the result of oceans slamming together at the pole, the storms are in fact the source of the oceanic currents.   The realization that The Calmira may be the source of the regular, strong currents on the planet, resulted in speculation that Calmira Island and the area near it may in fact be an engine, run by Ancient Tech to drive the entire ecology of the planet. This is driven many adventurous types to attempt to explore the area in earnest, in search of artifacts or even to catch a glimpse of functional Ancient Tech in action. Unfortunately, most die from the attempt.
