Fellbright Settlement in The Eagrela Chronicles: Onward Towards Death | World Anvil

Fellbright

Fellbright is a hamlet composed of refugees from the fallen principality of Asheria. Hugging the base of the Copper Summits and tucked away from the heat of the Carmine Savanna, the small settlement remains hidden away from the eyes of Soreine and their influence for the time being. The vast majority of individuals that live in this hamlet come from lower class, farming communities before but there are some of those who have been trained to utilized a trade of sorts here to better the lifestyle of the settlement and its people. Much of the race demographic stem from humans, elves, and half elves but mingled in the mix are a few halflings and of course the odd rarity or two.   Unfortunately while Fellbright is seemingly safe from the dominion so far to the west, this does not exclude them from the locals...   A clan of orc kin has taken notice of the hamlet. Instead of pillaging the settlement, their half-orc leader has decided that the hamlet should pay tribute on the first full moon of the red moon Phos every month. This tribute is handed off at a meeting point selected by the orcs where they have superiority in case the settlement gets any stupid ideas.   Another issue is the constant kobold harassment coming from the wild savanna. The kobold scavengers sneak into the farmlands occasionally and pilfer what goods they can for wherever their colony is under the sands. Several attempts have been made to track the 'little dragons' down but all attempts have been unfruitful. Compared to the half-orc and kobolds though, the gnoll packs that roam the lands are the biggest threats. The voracious hunger and cackling of these warbands can be heard from the hamlet deep into the night and guards have seen the monsters roaming the fringes of the tree line. Luckily, the gnolls do not seem too interested in the hamlet and are more content to infighting or assaulting orc scouting parties or even the stray kobold group. The only time the gnolls have become an issue is to those who camp outside the hamlet's walls. During the Nights of Terror, when all three moons hang new in the skies, the gnolls become even more aggressive and throw themselves at the walls of the hamlet and more than once the militia has had to engage with the beasts to deadly results on both sides.

Industry & Trade

Leaving their former legal tender back in their fallen homeland, the vast majority of the commerce is done through trade and a credit system for jobs performed. The small marketplace and bazaar maintain the collected accumulation of the farmlands and locally produced goods. Mostly root vegetables, beans, and greens are sold here but occasionally one can find fruits recovered from the red sand savanna far out to the east from the settlement. Pelts and hides from hunters along with some questionable meat sell at a premium. Tanners, coopers, and cobblers all ply their trade and sell goods here as well. While the settlement does maintain an active forge and blacksmith, most works of metal come to a collection of nails, farm equipment, and hinges of the sort. A modest armory is maintained for the local militia but far from anything that would prepare a full counterattack from an assault.

Infrastructure

The hamlet's infrastructure has quickly focused in development and defense. Homesteads with thatched roofing and lumber harvested from the trees that have grown from the runoff of the mountains above has been combined with harvested clay from a dominant stream that runs along the length of the settlement. Watchtowers have been established around key points and reinforced with wooden walls chopped to a point at the top. The soil is suitable enough from the parent source of the mountain to grow sustainable crops which a newer constructed windmill pulverizes wheat and seeds into flour to supplement everyone's diet with carbohydrates in the form of breads and beers. Wild fowl from the savanna have been domesticated and provide a steady protein source. Wild horses that have been broken and domesticated from the savanna provide beasts of burden and food in emergencies.   A community hall has been established early on to house all the lore and tomes rescued from the burning of the capital. Knowledge has always been tied to the Asheran people and the populace benefits from sharing of the knowledge while the literate of the citizens add to new and old parchments stored here. This building also doubles as a sort of religious center as many still adhere to old prayers and old ways to the pantheon, particularly Maltrud.   A statue of a owl winged maiden has been built at the hamlet's living quarter center, in tribute to the fallen king and queen.
