Baeldor The High (Bay-El-Door)

Glory on High

King of the Gods and head of the family, Baeldor is the most powerful god in the Drakenvelt. His churches are the grandest. His clergy are the most devout. His festivals are the most lavish. The sun touches on every aspect of the Drakenvelt and none can ever be allowed to forget it.   The patron of the nobility, his churche's coffers overflow with donations. His clergy reinforce the expectations of fealty and devotion to ones lord as much as they reinforce that the only way to ensure the Sun Lords grace is to ensure their devotional purity.   While the temples of other gods tend to be independent of each other, with their own High Priests and no obligation to one another, the Church of Baeldor is an organized religion. The High Prelate of Baeldor is acknowledged to be the supreme head of the Church of the Sun, and wields enormous political and economic clout. A rigid hierarchy of ranks, titles and fealty spreads outward like a web from the Chancel of Greyhaven.   This interconnectedness makes the Church of Baeldor a nation unto itself, with influence, money and at times, military power that is truly frightening to behold.

Clergy

The Ordained Clergy of Baeldor are drawn exclusively from the nobility of the Drakenvelt. While commoners and gentry worship and serve in ley capacities, only those from noble blood may rise to be leadership in the temples. The Clergy of Baeldor maintain a rank structure that codifies ones power and respect in the church. If the High Prelate of Greyhaven declares a new doctrin or dogma at dawn, it is sure that before the sun sets that day, every in the Greenwold will be aware of it - and within a week, the whole of the Drakenvelt.
  • High Prelate. There is only one High Prelate. They rule from the Chancel of Greyhaven.
  • Metropol. There are several Metropol. They rule geographic areas. They are usually based in major cities. Stonefast, Thile and Slew are known to have Metropol. There is a Metropol based somewhere in The Great Sea and at least two in the Midlands.
  • Prelate. Every City, Town or Abbey has a Prelate who is the local head of the church. Several dozen priests may serve under a Prelate. A Prelate who rules over an abbey is often called an Abbot.
  • Priest. A priest of Baelor is the lowest ordained rank of the church. They fill many roles in the church. In a village or settlement without other church presence, they act as the voice of the church.
  • Acolyte. The highest lay position, these unordained but devout agents of the church can perform ceremonies... and number in legions.
