Shardstone Material in The Dragon Isles | World Anvil

Shardstone

A jagged black-gray material that often is confused for obsidian, shardstone is found in patches known as glades across the desert. These small hand-sized stones stick up from the earth and are found in small clusters in groupings of three to seven. It is believed that these glades were created by electrical discharges from dragons. The discharges would fuse with the sands and dirt and transform into shardstone. Sometimes pieces of shardstone retain electrical properties or an affinity for lightning magic.   Shardstone is durable and sharp, and exceedingly hard to work and cut. Its favored use has been the creation of weapons and ceremonial tools. The discovery of a shardstone glade can prove to be extremely profitable and thus is greatly sought after and horded. While research has been limited, so far there have not been discoveries on creating shardstone, thus all shardstone must be found in the wild. Most shardstone had previously been found on the surface, or just under the sands, but one recent discovery has located a glade deep underground in a small ravine. This discovery has merchants hopeful that more of the valuable stone can be found by mining.

Properties

Physical & Chemical Properties

Often shardstone gives off weak electrical properties. Many crafters use the shardstone's affinity to create weapons that pack a shocking punch.

Geology & Geography

Shardstone glades have been most numerous in the Abnak Region, especially within the The Hun Desert, but other glades have been confirmed to exist in other parts of the Isles, even underwater along the coasts of the Manzia Region.

Origin & Source

No one is certain to the origins of shardstone, but leading theories attest the material to the electrical discharges of dragons. If this theory sports true, it is assumed no more shardstone can be created and there is a finite, nd even small, amount left to be discovered.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Shardstone is hard to work, and not very malleable. Thus it is often sharpened into blades, or used as bludgeoning weapons such as clubs.
