ocular solstice Tradition / Ritual in The Distorted Lands | World Anvil

ocular solstice

The eyes show you who's hearts are worth following.

The solstice's are widely celebrated by all sapient species, but due to the reproductive cycle in Veniran females it holds particular meaning to that species.

It has two separate parts. Those who do not have a partner try to find one, while those who are in a stable relationship take the time to strengthen their bond.

The slightly confusing name comes from the perceived slowing or stopping of time while looking into each others eyes.

Execution

As the solstice draws near Venirans prepare by cleaning out their homes and making or buying various pieces or art, mostly jewellery and clothing. This is also a time where old relationships are ended, a practice more common in young people.

Once the solstice hits those who are in a stable relationship stay mostly inside or at least secluded with their partner, while those who are not in a relationship are more active outside and in the many social gatherings around this time.

Finding the right partner during this time happens when a conversation dies out because both participants get lost in the eyes of the other. Once this has has been going on for long enough both enter a trance like state of mind and head of to one of their homes in a circular motion similar to some dances while maintaining eye contact.

Participants

All Venirans, except those who are not sexually mature, observe the tradition.

Observance

Veniran females experience an biannual oestrous cycle whose oestrous phase starts up to a day before and ends between 15 and 25 after the solstice's. For this reason the ocular solstice occurs concurrently.
