Turquoise Wallstone Species in The Discontinuum | World Anvil

Turquoise Wallstone

Turquoise wallstone, sometimes just called wallstone, is a tough, drought and salt tolerant plant, which is native to southern Myruthea.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The plant is low growing with a rosette of thick, turquoise coloured succulent leaves that retain reserves of water exceptionally well. It exploits any available moisture, able to concentrate and conserve the condensation of dew in addition to a rapid system for storing the water from any rainfall it might experience to allow it to survive long intervening dry periods.

Growth Rate & Stages

Turquoise wallstone is very slow growing and individual specimens can last for hundreds of years, with the average lifespan throught to be about three hundred years. It never gets much bigger than the span of a hand.

Ecology and Habitats

In the wild, turquoise wallstone grows in cliffside crevices, where water is scarce. It is drought and salt tolerant so it is most usually seen in coastal environs where it is one of the very few species able to colonise such biologically hostile locations.   It will also thrive in small cracks or nooks in the walls of old buildings, which is the reason for the name it is commonly known by.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Turquoise Wallstone leaves can be used in cooking where they make a fine peppery spice. Very little of the leaf is needed, since the flavour is strong. This is just as well, given how slow growing the plant is. Cooks who are aware of this relatively little known secret may value specimens that grow on the walls of their own dwellings where they can be judiciously harvested, but always with care not to take more than will regrow.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Turquoise Wallstone is native to Myruthea but it can now be found in the south of Tinturbean where it was spread by early human colonists.
