Old Kerandia

Old Kerandia, sometimes called the City of Ravens, was the ancient seat of the Witch Queens and has always been one of the most powerful of the lunar cities, although its fortunes have waxed and waned over time, like all the others. In the stylised illustration at the head of the article, painted by Waldrin Sax in 2401 AF, we see elements of the fabled mystery and power of a place that many consider to be half holy and half cursed. Kerandia has long practiced a particularly skilled style of gene splicing and is a centre for human flight with grafted, artifical and natural wings, but also a place where bird hybrids and artfully crafted giant dragonflies, employed as messengers and beasts of burden, fly between the citadel towers.

History

During the time of the Long Northern Peace, the rulers of Old Kerandia engaged in a treaty with the Grey Kings of Anoomenon, in recognition of which they gifted the Earthly city with a set of obelisks. These possess the unusual property of melting under moonlight, from which it is necessary to screen them. This arcane subtlety was intended as a reminder to the Grey Kings of the eldrich powers of the moon and the need to respect them.

Architecture

The city is styled in the manner of a series of gothic fortress towers with walls reminiscent of medieval castles built into the cliff sides. The remarkable libraries of the city are buried deep within the mountains. They hold some of the only remaining records of early human civilisation to survive the Great Forgetting which so profoundly affected the Earth.

Geography

Old Kerandia sits on the old "high shoreline" of the Sea of Tranquility in the bay of the Sinus Amoris, below the jumbled Montes Taurus peaks. Once, it lay direcly on the coastline but now it is only connected to the new "low shoreline" by the Kerandian canal which has five famous locks.
