Vidra Species in The Denary Realms | World Anvil

Vidra

The ripples gave away the presence of something under the surface of the water. The two pirates didn't pay attention, they had their backs turned to the water anyway, but rather kept arguing about how to split my gold. Then suddenly with a whoosh and one of the most acrobatic jumps I have witnessed, a Vidra came out of the water and stood behind them, a cutlass in each hand. "Well, well. What do we have here boys? Stealing without Deyna's prior approval? Drop the gold and scurry along. Deyna will forgive your first transgression." The two pirates chose to attack instead but the fight didn't end in their favor, their bodies now floating away on the darkly colored water.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vidra are one of the Bestial Races created during the Irruption Wars. They formerly were a sea mammal which acquired a humanoid form and rose to fight the invaders.   The Vidra are of medium stature, lithe and with short feet. They are very agile, hydrophiliac and are covered by a thick fur. Their face sports long whiskers and their fur usually is brown, gray or any colors in between. Their eyes are fully colored, usually black or brown.

Genetics and Reproduction

Vidra reproduce as other mammals, with a female and male member of the species uniting to produce offspring.

Growth Rate & Stages

Vidra have a rather short life span, reaching only about 50 cycles. They reach maturity at only 7 cycles though and keep being in their prime even at their old age.

Ecology and Habitats

Vidra are hydrophiliac, meaning they prefer to remain in the water. They tend to sleep by holding hands and floating on the surface of the sea. Such familial unions can connect with each other and form a team which is used to hunt some of their greatest predators such as sharks.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Vidra eat fish which they hunt and catch or smaller sea creatures such as urchins and crabs. They tend to keep a small stone in a pocket that they have within the folds of their fur. The rock is then used to open a shell or crack a crab to eat.

Biological Cycle

Vidra are one of the few races that don't concern themselves with technology or magic, choosing to use eithe only if they are on a trip of discovering other cultures. This is something some of their youngs choose to do but not all. They are allowed to go into the world and experience it themselves.   Otherwise, the Vidra will remain within the sea for the entirety of their lives.

History

Vidra were raised from their primitive state when during the Irruption Wars, Marzhin the Great decided to cast the spell that instilled intelligence into them. Together with the other Bestial Races they fought against the invaders earning their stay within Aell after Nathan Whytelaw deemed it to be so.   Unlike the other races they chose to stay away from civilization or take upon themselves a great task. Rather they opted to go out and remain in the great seas. Sometime after, the most well known member of their species, Deyna the Brown, became the first Pirate Queen uniting the other pirate crews under her flag. After Deyna passed away, no Vidra have been known to make a name for themselves.
