Skyship Vehicle in The Denary Realms | World Anvil

Skyship

Power Generation

The Skyships are powered by magic, through the use of Sihkerns. It allows them to levitate and is also used to power the navigational systems.

Propulsion

After levitating, a combination of rudders and sails is used to help navigate the skyship through the air. Some skyships are using more sails than others, while newer models are known to use additional Sihkerns that when used provide thrust to the skyship.

Weapons & Armament

The skyships are mainly used for cargo runs or to move passengers. However after their purchase some of the skyships are retrofitted with various weapons, usually explosive or incendiary devices. In these cases, an additional crew member is hired, the Bombardier, who is responsible for maintaining and handling them. In some rarer cases other weapons are also used.   There is only one Skyship that is known to be fully equipped for combat. It has no affiliation with any kingdom and belongs to pirates, the Sky Witch.

Armor and defense

Skyships are made from wood, as it allows for a lighter hull which increases their speed. However there are cases where they are reinforced with metal for sturdiness against weather phenomena.

Additional & auxiliary systems

The Skyships are not landing as the Sihkern is always "running" to allow them to constantly levitate. As such they need to either use a boarding bridge which they extend or make use of special docking stations. Some of them can also stand above the ground and make use of a ladder in some circumstances.

Hangars & docked vessels

The Cloudlord, the bigger Skyship ever built, could fit a smaller Skyship in its cargo hold. So theoretically it is possible to make use of docked vessels, but the cost is prohibiting for most as it basically requires a second Skyship to be built.
