Impermissible Spells in The Denary Realms | World Anvil

Impermissible Spells

There are arcane practices and categories of spells that are forbidden across Aell, following The Inundiation War. These spells and evocations were initially banned by The Order, but even after The Order's eventual disband the list grew and has become known as The Impermissible Spells. A pact was signed by the majority of kingdoms, the list has been banned and is not being taught in the Academy and even in kingdoms where the spells in the list are not outlawed or banned, their use is frowned upon. Even their description and wording has been lost in time and learning how to use them can be difficult to achieve. The list includes spells that have to do with darker arts, the dead and time/space tampering.
  • Pathing/Waygating: A powerful sorcerer would be able to use spells that allow them to teleport across great distances, even across the other Realms, outside of Aell. While teleporting within Aell is still used and permitted in some locations, using the Ancient Waygates and Pathways to cross into other worlds has been outlawed and the known Waygates have been demolished. The spells that allowed their activation were banned alongside the spells that would allow a powerful individual to teleport with the use of one such gate.
  • Blood Heal: Legends speak of a powerful spell that allows someone to heal even their greatest wounds and regenerate limbs they might have lost. However this spell requires a sacrifice of equal cost, which usually means that the caster needs to take a life to provide one as the trauma would be too great for anyone to bear. This spell has been banned alongside most of the Blood Magic practices that several dark sorcerer used.
  • Dream Eater: This spell allows the caster to enter the dreams of their victim. While there if they are powerful enough, they can replace their dreams and thoughts with ones of their choosing. This makes the victim highly compliant upon waking, basically a thrall of the caster. This spell has been used by sorcerers and other individuals to control even kings and queens.
  • Soul Flare: While there is no spell that allows the resurrection of an individual after they cross into the Realm of the Dead, there is a spell that allows the summoning of an individual's soul. The spell creates a path that the soul can follow back to their previous world which then allows them to inhabit a new body, or even their old one if it might still be viable. Of course the spell doesn't work after The Pneumatic Reckoning, although there are legends that speak of an individual that has accomplished such a feat.
  • Bonecrusher/The Torment: This spell was used for torturing prisoners and obtain information from them. It exercises a tremendous amount of force on the victim's body, breaking their bones one by one as if by a sledgehammer. The victim either can talk or die an excruciating death.
  • Erasement/Dreadfire/Psykiller This spell has been heard by other names as well, although they are lost in time. It is the single most powerful spell ever created and it uses a tremendous amount of energy. Its effects are instant and irreversible. Pit black fire erupts from the caster's hands or in a location he deems appropriate. Everything the spell touches instantly blackens, shrinks and disappears in what some describe as a scream of terror. Individuals killed this way get their souls destroyed and the area the spell was used on remains destroyed and takes great effort to be repaired. There is no way to recover something that was hit with Dreadfire.
  • Destiny's Cut/Time: This spell is used to reverse time and return items and individuals to a previous state. The longer the reversal of time will be, the more amount of energy is required. Stories talk of individuals who were able to combine this spell with Dreadfire and kill an individual while reversing his actions on the world. But such stories remain unsubstantiated to this day.
There are more spells that are forbidden, mainly spells aiming at using dark magic, killing or maiming people and other effects considered horrendous by the societies that encompasses the caster. While the bulk of the list of Impermissible Spells remains the same across Aell, several kingdoms have altered the less powerful spells to match the ones they deem as more dangerous. The seven spells above are ones that are considered universally impermissible though.
