Mørrek - The Endless Maw
"Hule Valhir" translates to "Hollow God". That is the title of Morrek, the Vacuous Vulture Spirit of the Everfrost.
After the lands of Vorrijaard became ensared by the Everfrost, the large cities withered and became unable to sustain themselves. They had grown accustom to plentiful farmlands and rich hunting, and were now forced to survive or die.
Praying to Gods in elaborately built temples and offering sacrifices became impossible as the people reverted to either nomadic lifestyles or small communities to lessen the stress of resources. In the absence of Gods, the Spirits returned. While none had worshipped them for ages, they still persisted, embodying the land itself. People were reminded to be in awe of nature, to fear it, and respect it, which imbued these Spirits with greater power.
Now, people of the Everfrost live with a deep reverence of the Spirits, lest they invoke their wrath.
Morrek is often associated with death, but she is something far worse than simply expiring. She is the essence of entropy, a dark spirit of oblivion that consigns souls to the Final Death.
In Everfrost culture, the Final Death is the moment when you are forgotten in totality.
"Who will be the last soul to remember your name? And when they, too, fall from this mortal plane...what shall remain?" ~ An Ode of Morrek
She needs no followers or worshippers because she seeks to embrace all creatures in her inky wings, smothering they essence into nothingness. Thus, the only people who ever offer her anything are the truly forlorn seeking an end to their own suffering of existence. They pray for a swift death and to be embraced into a Final Death quicker.
It is said that if she accepts, all memories of the person will be wiped from the minds and souls of everyone who knew them.
Thus it is customary to treat any unknown corpses found in the Everfrost as sacred. Most clans will treat the body with respect, giving it a funeral, as if the stranger were a cherished member of their own clan. After all, they may not simply remember them.
