Stentor

The story of Stentor, dragon of the Rootways

Have you heard about Stentor? No? He's the dragon that lives under the Forest. He created the Rootways. But Stentor's history doesn't begin in the Forest. He's not actually from here. A long time ago, Stentor and his kin used to roam lands far and wide. That's right, dragons didn't used to live here. And unfortunately, this is likely the last place they will ever live. Because Stentor is the last.   Stentor came to this place with his mate, whose name is lost to time. They were hoping to hatch a new brood of dragons, safe from the incursions of the humans. Such was the need for new dragons that both him and his mate left their hoards behind, choosing to live for their species rather than die for their greed. But it wasn't enough.   It wasn't long after the first brood was laid that the couple came under attack. Zephnos, the terror of the Forest, proved too strong for even a fully grown dragon to handle. Stentor lost his wife and their eggs in the battle, and barely got out of the fight alive.   Stentor was shattered by this loss. With no mate, no hoard and no way out of the Dark Forest, Stentor fell into a depression. And when dragons become depressed, they go to sleep. But there were no caves to sleep in in the Forest, so Stentor began to dig. Mindlessly he dug into the ground of the Forest, tearing through years of ancient tree roots. We don't know if he ever stopped digging because Stentor hasn't been seen in years. Even now, the only evidence that he exists is the cave system called the Rootways... and the glass claw marks in the walls.   Every now and then, people say they can hear him. His growling and groaning. A dragon half dead, insane and the last of his kind, doomed to live on knowing that his life has no meaning.   So if you ever smell smoke while traveling in the Rootways, don't fear it. Stentor is a victim of circumstance, and deserves our pity. For not even dragons can escape the end of their own story.
