Brannen Som Fryser, heart of the Rime

Brannen Som Fryser, or Fire that Freezes, is an old myth that describes the disappearance of the Salamander during the Rimeheart festival. Every year, the Salamander disappears from its campfire. No one knows where it disappears to, or the various events that occur during this time. However, most believe that the source of this myth, the mysterious sun that appears during it, is the reason.   Everyone knows that the Dark Forest is connected to the Campgrounds, and the Campgrounds acts as a portal to other worlds. But what if the Salamander itself was to use that portal? Other visitors have talked about other "nexus worlds" that connect the various worlds. They all seem to share a single trait: they like to "steal" from other worlds. Something may go missing in one world and show up in another. Many dwellers of the Forest believe this to be the case with Place 119, the house precariously perched above the Flooded Forest.   Every winter, the line between worlds grows even thinner. Where the moon rose and disappeared, a sun now shines. But instead of giving the warmth and love that so many of us know, this ball of fire freezes everything its gaze touches. This trait has earned the sun its name: "Brannen Som Fryser".   The Dark Forest is normally a place of heat and darkness, written by an occultic flame sprouting from a mythical beast. So it should come as no surprise that when Brannen Som Fryser is in the sky, the Forest is quenched and subdued. The Skogverge appear less frequently, and the ones that do are quiet and non-aggressive. The shadows that wrap around the trees, while still present, are still and nonthreatening once more.   Unfortunately, the Salamander itself also mysteriously disappears during this time. Until it reappears, people crowd around the central bonfire in the Campgrounds, adding everything they can to it to keep it going. Eventually, the Salamander does indeed reappear, and sends those who have kept its fire going home. This was the beginning of the Rimeheart event, and has been going on for years now.   So where does the Salamander go during Rimeheart? None knows. However, most believe that the Salamander leaves the Campgrounds to negotiate with Brannen Som Fryser. The common belief is that Brannen Som Fryser is itself another Salamander, and that its appearance in this world means the Dark Forest is close to another nexus world. Whatever the reason, we do know that after the Salamander returns, the Sun begins to dim once more, and its freezing touch recedes, leaving behind only the usual light and warm. This heralds the beginning of spring in the Dark Forest.
