Webi

Webi are a race of spider-like humanoids found natively in the world of Arachnarium. They are well known for their somewhat mischievous nature, though they are generally well respected for their willingness to help other groups.
They are major exporters of custom-made clothing, they weave this with their own silk. Their clothing is very high quality and can be sold for a quite a reasonable price.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Webi are a spider-like humanoid standing at around 150cm at full size. They stand on 2 legs and have 6 arms, each ending with 3 clawed hands. They have slim bodies with wider hips and are covered in armoured skin lined with a layer of very fine hair.

In the palms of each of their hands is a web spinner. They are able to switch between two types of silk, a strong thread that is suited for hanging from or building webs and a weaker glue-like silk that is stickier, making it perfect for attaching themselves or other things to walls.

Ecology and Habitats

Webi thrive in forests, caves and other areas with plenty of support surfaces for their webs. They live in small towns hidden in these locations, they tend to live in fairly small houses with just enough space to comfortable home the number of webi living there. Their homes are often surrounded by webs that serve both as security from outsiders and a method of passively catching food.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Traditionally, they would have just eaten bugs and small animals such as mice and birds that get caught in their webs along with fruit they foraged, they still do this but now prefer to make their food a little more "civilised".

Most modern meals involve baking their prey into cakes, pastries and candies. These are generally much more appetising to eat, even members of other species will buy and eat them, though not all are aware of the ingredients.

Social Structure

Webi are led by an elected representative referred to as the Web Mistress or Web Master. The Web Mistress/Master is elected once every 2 years, though this can be shortened in the case of a corrupt candidate. They hold very little power on their own and are required to hold public referendums to change laws, emergency laws can be put in place without a vote but they can be repealed by a public vote 20 days after passing.

Within families, they see whoever provides the most as the head of the household, though in reality, they don't hold much power over other members of the household. It is quite normal for young webi to leave home with friends and siblings if the head of the household is too controlling.

Facial characteristics

Webi have a short round face with 4 eyes, 2 large central eyes and 2 smaller eyes for peripheral vision. They have a wide mouth with two protruding fangs on their upper "lip", these produce a weak venom that is only strong enough to stun a pigeon-sized bird.

Average Intelligence

They are roughly on par with humans for intelligence. They are adapted a little better for creativity, this often leads to somewhat unusual decisions when solving problems.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The vision of Webi is adapted to the dull lighting conditions of Arachnarium, they are able to see in brighter conditions but generally prefer to stick to darker areas.

The fine hairs covering their body are highly sensitive to vibrations, this allows them to be hyperaware of their surrounding area and aids in hunting.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Webi society is generally female-dominated, while the size difference between male and female webi compared to other spiders in barely noticeable, females are notably stronger, allowing them to push their way into power with ease. While their modern society is much more progressive and has men in positions of power, most leadership positions are still held by women.

Average Technological Level

Webi have reached a reasonable level of technology. They have basic computers at their disposal, most using vector graphics and their healthcare technology is on par with that of modern humans.

Webi were responsible for planning and establishing the Web Net, a basic interworld internet service. They are only responsible for the local networks of themselves and a few nearby worlds, setting up a local network is usually left in the hands of the world's residents.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Webi, like most sapients in the Cutting Room Floor, speak in Interworld Basic, a language that has convergently developed in many different worlds. They also occasionally talk in racoon-like chittering, no one else has managed to translate it but it seems to be used to mock those who don't understand it.

Common Dress Code

Webi generally dress in loose-fitting upper clothing and securely fitted lower clothing. The most common clothing item a variant on ponchos designed specifically not to fall off when they are climbing around.

Their clothing is almost always woven from their own silk, it is incredibly sturdy when woven into a fabric. It has a long life before breaking down and can be repaired easily, it can even be enough to disperse the blow from weapons.
