Sprites
There are giant whales off the coast of Uanuk. Inside them are entire ecosystems full of fungi and worms. Within these ecosystems are tiny cities which house teeny-tiny creatures known as Sprites. The whale's blood glows, allowing the creatures to see.
While the Sprites are sapient beings, not flora or fauna, they will still be talked about here because it’s easier. Sprites are green humanoids with long necks and trunks, and they get their oxygen from sucking the blood of the whales.
They build systems of mirrors inside the whales which allow them to see outside the whale’s blow holes and therefore see other whales. If another whale is spotted, the Sprites can then enter small pods which they can steer out of the whale’s mouth into the mouth of other whales. This is done for the purpose of trading. Returning to the whale is the hard part. Oftentimes, Sprites will throw ropes outside their whales to affix them to other whales.
For sustenance, the Sprites have farms of fungus, and will often hunt worms and then roast them in large fire pits constructed within the fireproof areas of the whales’ spleens.
Their cities are built out of seaweed hardened with various elixirs. They use tools constructed out of various debris the whales swallow. Travel inside these cities is done on the backs of small bugs known as Lodasts.
Their societies are heavily communal, with everything being shared, and no real concept of money.
While other sapient beings have had contact with Sprites, the language of the Sprites is a complicated one made of various clicks, and Humans have so far been unable to decipher this tongue. It also appears that The Sprites prefer to keep to themselves. All that we know about Sprites comes from the hard work of multiple Uanite scientists in the late 3700s.
As such, there are many questions about Sprite culture which we have yet to be unanswered, such as what religion they practice, what kind of art they make, if they have any concept of gender, or if they practice war. The only answers to these questions are guesses achieved through the brief glimpses we’ve been able to get of their society, but to spend time on all of them would take until the mountains crumble, so we must move on.
