Kaetru

The Kaetru live almost entirely inĀ Badawan.   They are amphibians, beginning life as fish-like creatures known as Rupoles. Their adulthood form is humanoid, with green skin, webbing, and gills which allow them to breathe both under and over water.     The Kaetru have very strict ideas of politeness and conduct. When entering a room, one must always do the traditional greeting of placing their hands perpendicular to each other. Similarly to Diqui, the Kaetru have wisdom and reverence for the elderly. Another value which is important to the Kaetru is that of honor and loyalty. They have what are known as Azure Vows, which can be sworn to an employer, a parent, or a leader, and the breaking of these vows means death. As a result, Kaetru are known for their worth ethic and their commitment to their government.   Aesthetics are also very important to the Kaetru. How one looks does not matter, but how one dresses, applies their makeup, and decorates their house is important and considered to reflect the soul of that person. One way this comes out is in handwriting. Poor and scribbled handwriting is indicative of someone with a less-than-stellar soul. As such, all Laetru are taught calligraphy and the importance of it. It also comes out in a sort of sacrality being placed on cleaning.   The Kaetru have many specific rituals involved with the eating of food. Food is almost always eaten communally, and when done so, a specific process must unfold. The host or hosts will bring the food out to the table, and then every person will take some food and put it on their plate and then thank the host. This will be done one by one going clockwise. When that is done, everyone will take a moment to engage in a prayer of thanks and then eat. Kaetru generally eat with two utensils: a spoon and a knife. The spoon is to be placed to the left, as it is considered the more feminine utensil, and the knife is to be placed to the right.   Kaetru society is heavily gendered, but both genders are considered to be equal. Men are seen working more physical activities, such as fighting and farming, while women perform activities such as sewing and raising children. However, acts such as cooking and cleaning are seen as being for both men and women. In fact, some Kaetru will have a betrothed man and woman cook together as a way for them to familiarize with each other. The act of making a meal with someone is often seen as fulfilling that purpose, as both parties have to work together.   Every male Kaetru is expected to be taught Harmony Arts. These are various practices intended to sharpen and focus the mind through a mixture of meditation, martial arts, and various other techniques. Those who are taught this are often resistant to Menta magic, have the ability to turn off their emotions in extreme situations, and are capable of various other mental feats. To continuously keep their mental skills sharp, Kaetru often participates in games of strategy such as chess.   Kaetru only drinks alcohol on special occasions, and with others. The act of sharing alcohol with someone is considered a sacred act, as it shows you trust them enough to let your senses be dulled when around them.
