Sovereign's Day

Falling on the 25th of Rainsfall, Sovereign's Day is Wyneil Empire holiday originally dedicated to celebrating the wine harvest but adapted in the Dark Era to celebrate the crowning of the First Sovereign.   The day of Riven the Pious' conversion to the faith of the eight, in which the living Sovereign reaffirms their faith in the highest temple of the Weinwyr. It is a holy day and of great significance to the Haisan, who consider this day the "Second Covenant," bonding together people of the world in their faith of the Eight, with the first being the covenant of man with the Eight.

History

Held on the 25th of Rainsfall, Sovereign's Day was originally a wine festival dedicated to a pre-Octan deity known in modern religious parlance as The Madness.   A celebration of the profane, this festival represented an indulgence in the cheapest of wines, usually pressed during the previous autumn. A portion of the year's wine was offered back to the soil itself in a ritual led by priests of the time. Various fertility rites often followed.   Following the Crowning of the First Sovereign, much was done to eliminate the heretical practices around the empire. The holiday was quickly restructured by the church as a dedication to the Sovereign, transforming the fertility festival into a feast day and celebration of national identity.

Observance

Around the Wyneil Empire pagaents are often held celebrating the crowning of the First Sovereign, wine is distributed to the public, roses bouquets are hung from windows, and an imperial parade is held in the capital of Weinwyr. In Sunhollow, the holiday takes on religious overtures as it represents the divine will of the Eight made manifest in world, and the crowning of the "First Appointed" and foundation of the "Second Covenant."
