Salnari Spices

Salnarae is well known for its unique and valuable Spices, including; Kalavae-Keathai, a mild and sweet seasoning beloved in The Holy Asena; Charream, a tangy herb used to preserve meat on long journeys; Yullaeos, a potent and spicy flavoring used widely in Salnari Cuisine, and many others. these various spices and herbs are globally valued -by those who can afford them, at least- and they are a core export for Salnarae, bringing great wealth and prestige to The Kingdom.

History & Usage

History

People have cultivated spices in Salnarae for thousands of years since the dawn of the ascendant age. Records from The Ascendant Empire mention the special herbs grown in the swamps of Salnarae and on the plains of tiar. However, for most of history, these unique spices have been of little note or value and weren't exploited until the 14th century SE when the kingdom of serenae rose and began to control their harvesting and sale. From then on, serenae -and then lerhan- grew rich off the cultivation of spice and its export to tyetol, balos, and even Naltry, slowly building a great empire built on herbs and plants.    Later in the 17th century SE -just after the Salnarae Dynasty ousted the Lerhan Dynasty-, a small crime ring, known as The Phula Kranta, meaning "white bloods," began to take greater control over the shipment of spice, extorting farmers and taking their harvests. They rose quickly after their founding, using violence and coercion, directly taking over or managing many spice fields throughout the country, often driving workers with brutal slavish punishments for any perceived infractions. Soon they controlled much of the country and were near equal in power to the unstable salnari government that had not yet recovered from its civil war -they specifically gained power in and around the capital of Saranl. This unpleasant arrangement of shared control has continued for many decades -although there have been several somewhat violent disagreements between The Phula Kranta and the kingdom- yet it still stands to the present.

Everyday use

Despite their high value in other lands, Salnari Cuisine frequently incorporates spices from the region. They form an integral part of Salnari culture and daily life as well. Most people in Salnarae proper work -and often live- on spice farms, giving the plants a status of nigh unparalleled importance.
