Rise and Fall of Winegarden Families

    The Bezuidenhouts fall, the Caliburns rise
    Political event

    The Bezuidenhout family finally succumbs to years of economic and social attacks from the Caliburns. They are expelled from the Inner Circle of the Thirteen Founding Families, the first to suffer such a fate. The Caliburns take their place among the Thirteen, and the Bezuidenhout family fades into history, completely obliterated.

    The Metaxes fall ill, the Tyrfings ascend
    Political event

    An unknown sickness runs rampant through the entire Metaxes family, including relatives in other Winegarden houses. All family members perish from this disease, leaving an empty place among the Thirteen. The Tyrfing family is quickly voted in to take their place.

    The Fiannaiocht are bankrupt, the Aziz rise
    Political event

    The Fiannaiocht family goes bankrupt, and all descends marry into other families to avoid personal ruin. The Aziz family is nominated to take their place among the Thirteen, and it is rumored to have passed because at least four of the other families were promised the hand of Fatima Aziz, said to the be the most beautiful woman of her time.

    The Tyrfing scandal and the Oyekan acknowledgement
    Political event

    A particularly scandalous affair among the Tyrfing family throws them into complete social excommunication. Their place among the Thirteen is revoked, and the family name slowly fades out over the course of the next few decades. They are replaced by near unanimous vote with the resolute Oyekan family.

    The Kyekans depart, the Nandakas ascend
    Political event

    For completely unknown reasons, the Kyekan family leaves the City completely in a mass exodus. No reason was ever given or uncovered, nor was their destination revealed. In the sudden vacuum of power, the Inner Circle elected the Nandaka family to take their place, both among the Thirteen and in the eerily empty Kyekan estates.

    The Curtanas arrive in Winegarden
    Political event

    Having become financially powerful during the Troubles, the Curtana family makes the leap to Winegarden to establish themselves among the elite. Though not among the Thirteen, they increased their clout by purchasing the old Fiannaiocht estates, which had since been the house to a branch of the Joyeuse family.

    The Almaces dwindle, the Volkovs seize power
    Political event

    After years of poor financial planning, extravagant excesses, and social bickering, the Almace family was struck particularly hard by the Calamity and the resulting troubles. Eventually they are viewed as politically impotent and unseated from the Thirteen - a vote initiated through pressure from the Volkov family. The Volkovs in turn push their own case and are voted to take the vacate seat among the Inner Circle. The Almace family remains in Winegarden, but eventually the family name dies.

    The Labans step down, the Sharangas are raised
    Political event

    The Laban family, suffering through years of financial difficulties, elects to depart from Winegarden society. Rumors abound as to specific causes, many blaming persecution and attempts of control by Percival Excalibur, leveraging the once amiable relationship between the families. All members of the family take new surnames and disperse into the general population of the City, leaving behind their seat in the Inner Circle and all their estates and contracts. At the petition of Ruth Laban, this is all given over to the Sharanga family, another stalwart ally of the Laban family who never waivered in earnest support. The Inner Circle welcomes the Sharangas to the Thirteen.

    The Geiss family arrives in Winegarden
    Political event

    Othmar Geiss, newly rich beyond his wildest dreams, purchases the old Almace estate and moves his family to Winegarden, against his wife Yoshiko's protests. The family is held at an arm's length by the rest of society for many years, deemed 'nouveau riche'.
