Gray Moss Species in The Cinder | World Anvil

Gray Moss

Gray Moss was a gift from the Masters to their children. Among The Allied Tribes , it is the primary food crop, serving a wide variety of uses in their culinary arts.   When cooked, it has a bland flavour, like that of yeast, but is amazingly filling and nourishing for even the stoutest Dwarf. Experiments by the [Masters Blades] have also shown it to have useful properties in healing wounds, but must be used sparingly in this regard.   Due to its lightless growth cycle, all settlements of the Tribes must be planned around a delve or cleft with the right conditions for growing this moss.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gray Moss grows quickly and in thick layers with tendrils springing out in all directions.

Genetics and Reproduction

Gray Moss grows with frightening speed if properly maintained and fertilized. However, making new colonies involves cutting a piece of metal from the halls of the Masters with the Moss growing on it. Then, it must be transported under tight seals to prevent light contamination.

Growth Rate & Stages

A new cluster grows reluctantly as it spreads from the metal plate, but once attached to the stone walls spreads with gusto and speed.

Ecology and Habitats

This plant is found only in caves controlled by The Allied Tribes. It grows exclusively in the dark, sunless caverns and tears in the landscape common to the western fringes of the continent, feeding off the mineral rich rocks.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The Moss lives off the minerals in the rocks, but on special occasions an honoured member of the Tribe will be placed within the delve and left to give birth to the nourishment of the settlement after their passing.

Biological Cycle

The Moss tends to grow slower if the temperature rises too far, and deals well with being within the 8-15 degrees celsius area.
