While the society is patriarchal, women wield significant influence through spiritual, sexual, and social power.   Men’s Roles: Providers and Protectors: Men are expected to be warriors, herders, and traders, providing for their families and protecting the tribe. Leadership: The head of the family (usually the eldest son or brother) makes decisions for the tribe, but men often rely on the counsel of women, particularly Sandwalkers and healers.   Women’s Roles: Spiritual Leaders: Women serve as Sandwalkers, interpreting the will of the gods through sand divination and fire readings. They hold immense influence over tribal decisions. Healers and Midwives: Women who serve as healers or midwives are both revered and feared, using their knowledge of herbal medicine and childbirth to shape family dynamics. Sexual and Social Power: Women use their beauty, sensuality, and social networks to influence men and families. Consequences for “Soiled” Women: Women who are raped or engage in extramarital relations lose their status and are often tattooed as a mark of shame.
