While in jail, Venumbra visits Tanozall and Syr'Cap, and they pledge their undying loyalty to him. Venumbra chooses to test this, by pulling them into a dream, along with Tarksson, Toan, and Cedric, where they relive many betrayals they committed throughout the last several months. At the end of it, an image of Daestrus presents itself as an enemy of Venumbra, and Tanozall immediately betrays Venumbra to side with his God. Syr'Cap is loyal to his brother, and this proves Venumbra's point, that they have no true loyalties, and can never be trusted. So he cuts them off, literally. Syr'Cap loses his Werebear abilities, and Tanozall loses his shadow magic, causing his foot (which had already been severed) to fall off, and he lost his Wight abilities, including his Scythe.
