Volante

The Volante is an Elven-grown weapon, made entirely out of wood, crafted by skilled Shapers. It has the appearance of a one-handed wooden sword, with a blade curved like a scimitar, but slender like a katana. The edge of it is made out of over a thousand tightly packed, crisscrossing thorns, like a razor-sharp sawblade. While the blade looks quite elegant, it is actually incredibly brutal. Unlike normal blades where slashing attacks will result in deep cuts, the Volante will bite into its victims body and stick, forcing the attacker to violently pull the blade down, ripping the flesh with it.   Many Elves carry a Volante around as a ceremonial weapon, and many sorcerers and druids use the Volante as their spellcasting focus.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The Volante was designed for use against flesh, and the thousands of thorns tend to snap when going up against hard surfaces. The Volante is considered Brittle vs Medium/Heavy armor.    The Volante does not break as easily as other Stone Age weapons. Where other weapons shatter beyond repair on a Natural 1 (and sometimes Natural 20), the Volante merely has some of its thorns snap off, reducing its overall damage by d2 (meaning it drops from a 1d6/2d6 to a 1d4/2d4 weapon, then 1d2/2d2, then 0/0). At 0 Damage, it becomes a weak club, doing no damage except for your Ability score bonus. If it breaks in this state, then it will snap in half, breaking beyond repair.   As with many Elven-grown tools, the Volante has the ability to repair itself over time. Provided the Volante hasn't been broken beyond repair, it can regrow its broken thorns relatively quickly, repairing d2 damage per Long Rest. All that's required is to place the roots of the weapon (usually in its pommel) into some fertile soil, and not disturbing it for 8 hours.

Manufacturing process

The Volante is grown out of strong woods by skilled Elven Shapers. The average Volante requires one to two years to grow, and even the smallest mistake can be irreversible and ruin the weapon.
