Eye of Cthulhu Myth in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

Eye of Cthulhu

The Eye of Cthulhu is a sigil commonly associated with the Great Old One Cthulhu.

Summary

The Eye is a complex sigil surrounding an arcane eye, said to represent the rise of the Cthulhu from his forced slumber. While drawn in an ornate fashion, the simplest form of the Eye that still holds power is an "X" with a circle at the inserction point, and a longer, vertical line piercing through the center. It is antithetical to the Elder Sign, and is considered to be crafted in such a way to be a mockery of the symbol itself. Viewing the Eye is said to invoke madness in those untrained in the eldritch arts, and thus its usage is banned on every planet in the Pact Worlds outside of government-owned libraries and Aucturn.

Historical Basis

The Eye of Cthulhu is found prominently in the works of the Cult of the Elder Mythos, and is used as a centerpiece in their rituals related to awakening, revival, and rebirth.   The sigil was used as a foci during the events of the Phoenix Eclipse conflict, where the Grays built ritual sites across Castrovel and Akiton in such a way that the Eye was drawn across the stars.
