Challenger Character in The Centurion's Riddle | World Anvil

Challenger

(a.k.a. The Challenge)

The Challenger is one of the more aggressive Saints, often compared to the Roaring Justice and the Shield of Light for their forceful hand in mortal affairs. Depicted as a muscular, humanoid female in flowing robes, the Challenger is often shown in powerful, chaotic landscapes, as she despises complacency, and is a strong advocate of change.   It is said that she rose to divinity after challenging Angradd to a duel, which she won after a legendary display of trickery and guile. As her prize, the Challenger consumed a spark from the god's mighty forge, which is often attributed as the reason for her fiery attitude.   She has dueled with the Disciple on many occasions, but claims to have only defeated him once. The Hunter is said to have tied in their only sparring session, and the two vowed to never fight again. A legend with origins in Absalom Station states the she once challenged the Wave, but the fight ended after a moon was thrust from its orbit, threatening its citizens. The followers of the Wolf Queen claim that the two were once lovers, although this is unsupported by any historical or spiritual texts.   The Challenger is mostly worshiped by adventurers and duelists, as they admire her wild spirit.

Blessing of the Challenger

Range: Single Source, Single Target Action: Swift Duration: Special, See Text   When invoking the Blessing of the Challenger, a blue and gold standard floats behind the caster, connecting their body and their target with minuscule, ethereal chains. The target cannot refuse this mighty challenge, which connects the two entities in a cosmic duel enforced by the Challenger herself.   Should a creature strike or aid either combatant during the ensuing combat, the Challenger will personally smite them, often resulting in their immediate death. Should either combatant willingly attack a creature other than their fellow duelist, or attempt to flee from the duel, a similar fate will befall them and the combat ends. There are no other rules enforced by the Challenger, although others can be agreed upon in advance, and are similarly binding.   The effects of this Blessing continues until one of the combatants is unconscious (the Challenger will not allow goodly or neutral creatures to be killed) or dead.
