Dunhelm

Dunhelm is a fortified city located at the southern edge of the Thalwyn province, along the coast of The Castros Sea. Known for its imposing stone walls and strategic coastal position, Dunhelm serves as both a military bastion and a thriving port city. It stands as a testament to Thalwyn's resilience and strength, guarding the peninsula's southern approach while fostering a robust maritime economy.

Demographics

Dunhelm is home to a diverse population, primarily composed of Redmanes who have settled in the city over generations. The city has also attracted a variety of other ethnic groups, including sailors, traders, and craftsmen from across the Castros Sea. This mix of cultures has given Dunhelm a unique character, blending the rugged traditions of the Redmanes with the cosmopolitan influences of its many visitors. The city's population is known for its strong sense of duty, a trait that has been cultivated over centuries of defending the southern coast.

Government

Dunhelm falls under the jurisdiction of the provincial capital, Redwick, but it is governed locally by House Carthas, a noble family that has long been allied with House Thalorum Thalorum. House Carthas, known for their naval prowess and deep connection to the sea, has ruled Dunhelm for centuries, ensuring the city's loyalty to Thalwyn while maintaining a degree of autonomy in managing its affairs. The current head of the house, Lord Maric au Carthas , oversees the city with a firm but fair hand, balancing the needs of its citizens with the strategic interests of Thalwyn.

Industry & Trade

Dunhelm's economy is heavily influenced by its coastal location. The city is a major port, facilitating trade between Thalwyn and distant lands across The Castros Sea. Its shipyards are renowned for producing some of the finest vessels in the region, ranging from merchant ships to warships. In addition to shipbuilding, Dunhelm is a center for fishing and salt production, industries that have sustained the city for generations. The city's markets are bustling with activity, offering goods from across the peninsula and beyond, making it a hub for both local and international trade.

Infrastructure

The city's infrastructure reflects its dual role as a military fortress and a thriving port. Dunhelm is encircled by formidable stone walls, designed to withstand both siege and storm. Within the walls, the city's streets are well-maintained, with broad avenues leading to key locations such as the harbor, the central market, and the keep. The harbor itself is one of Dunhelm's most impressive features, capable of accommodating a large fleet of ships. The city also boasts a network of canals that facilitate the movement of goods and people, further enhancing its status as a major trade center.

Districts

Dunhelm is divided into several distinct districts:
  • The Harbor District: This district is the lifeblood of Dunhelm, where ships from all over The Castros Sea dock to unload their cargo. The harbor is surrounded by warehouses, shipyards, and the bustling fish market, making it the busiest part of the city.
  •
  • The Military District: Located near the southern walls, this district is home to the city's garrison and military training grounds. It includes the barracks, armories, and a command center from which Dunhelm's defenses are coordinated.
  •
  • The Market District: At the heart of the city lies the Market District, a vibrant area filled with shops, stalls, and taverns. Here, traders from near and far come to buy and sell goods, making it a focal point for commerce and social interaction.
  •
  • The Residential District: Most of Dunhelm's population resides in this district, which is characterized by its narrow, winding streets and sturdy stone houses. The district also includes several public squares where citizens gather for festivals and public events.
  •
  • The Noble District: Located near the keep, this district is where the city's elite reside. It features grand estates, including the residence of Lord Maric Carthas, and offers a commanding view of the surrounding landscape and the sea.

History

Dunhelm was founded in 190 CE as a military outpost designed to protect the southern coast of Thalwyn from seaborne invaders. Over the centuries, it evolved into a full-fledged city, bolstered by its strategic importance and the prosperity brought by maritime trade. The construction of the city’s formidable walls in 220 CE marked a turning point in its history, transforming it into one of the most secure settlements on the peninsula.   In 322 CE, House Carthas, a rising naval power, was granted control of Dunhelm by House Thalorum in recognition of their service during the War of the Eastern Isles. Under their leadership, Dunhelm expanded its shipbuilding capabilities and solidified its reputation as a maritime stronghold.   Throughout its history, Dunhelm has been at the forefront of Thalwyn’s defense, repelling numerous attempts by pirates and rival provinces to breach its walls. The city played a crucial role in the naval battles of the 4th century, particularly during the War of the Southern Seas in 389 CE, when its fleet helped secure Thalwyn’s dominance over The Castros Sea.   Today, in 693 CE, Dunhelm remains a symbol of strength and resilience, continuing to serve as both a guardian of the southern coast and a thriving center of trade and industry, under the steadfast rule of House Carthas.
