Solid Resonance Material in The Canticles | World Anvil

Solid Resonance

My man, your stradivarius is no good. If you want anyone to buy your instrument, either you get one with a big name, or craft it out of the purest resonance you can find. Either way, it's not going to be easy. And if you ever get your hands on both, you're dead for sure.

In some places across the galaxy, the environment takes a shape favorable to the appearance of supernatural events. It is not known what cause these phenomenons to appear, if it is a peculiar conformation, physical conditions or something else entirely, like pure chance. In these places, strong resonances intertwine continuously, bending the ground and shifting the very law of the universe. They are places of great dangers, as they are unpredictable, but many still brave the danger for the precious reward that hides in the deepest part of the resonance wells: solidified resonance.

Gold mines

Even better than gold, even a gram of solid resonance is worth millions. Not only the wells are scarce, they are very dangerous and can claim the life of even the best adventurer. The safest mines have been exploited to the very last drop and abandoned, not without claiming thousands of lives.

The material's exact condition of formation is poorly known, as this process has never been observed, not even in simulation. The only leads indicates that it is a very lengthy process, perhaps in the millions or billions of years, and that it only forms at the core of the wells, where the Songs collide with a force able to shred space itself.

Crafting material

Solid resonance can take a wide variety of shapes and looks. It usually adopts a nearby material like it is growing out of it, or as a glass-like viscous substance. It would be hard to discern if not for its seemingly perfect conditinon in the middle of a ravaged landscape. Raw, it can be spotted as the only tree standing in a twirling plain or an ore vein held together in an asteroid crumbling on itself.

Surprisingly, it can be worked on the same way than the material it imitates, easing the process. Refined, solid resonance is an incredibly valuable material, as it is the primary elemnt for the most powerful instruments. Its innate ability to amplify and complexify resonance make it a dangerous weapon even in the hands of a child, and a tool with near-infinite capabilities when wielded by a master of the art.

Bloody treasure

The total mass of solid resonance extracted since the day of Unison is 546 kilograms. This extreme scarcity coupled with the fact that every accessible ore has already been found opened the path for terrible conflicts over the possession of even a gram of resonance.

Almost no instruments have been made entirely out of this material. Only Cantors and a few of the most influential Hedonists could pretend such an honor. In total, 12 instruments are made of pure resonance, and you would need to sell a planet to have the privilege of even sightseeing one. Since their owners tends to be targeted by assassins and rival powers, few brag about it. Among them are Illyn Tydale and Armand Sym, confident in the fact that no one would dare to oppose them, even for such a prized artifact.

Most of the rest has been diluted in various alloys containing an infinitesimal portion of solid resonance, used to craft extremely expensive high-end instruments. As even a few nanograms of resonance has a significant effect, the purity of the material is one of the main characteristics buyers look at when choosing a new tool.

Really well done. The idea of interplantetary wars being fought over a gram of resonance sends chills down my spine. It’s haunting because it’s just so plausible. Great job! Enjoy summer camp!
