The Bubble

Scope

The motivation behind building The Bubble

The Bubble is a reading room for visitors to sample short stories and then, perhaps, to enjoy exploring the background behind them via timelines, images and maps. The balance of art work and stories is fluid but the site acts as a reference for readers and for the author when creating new content.

The goal of the project

To provide a space for readers and viewers to sample my written work and digital art.

The Bubble's Unique Selling point

The story content is the core and most important element for me. If the stories work then the site works. A casual viewer could also just enjoy the art work and the links between the images should provide more viewing satisfaction within the context of the site than simply viewing them in isolation.

Theme

Genre

Traditional "old school" science fiction of the kind that was more popular in written form in the second half of the twentieth century. There's more than a dash of space opera in the Bubble.

Reader Experience

The much quoted "sense of wonder" is a key element of this genre and certainly something I would like to be able to evoke with some of the stories, although it is not always their primary focus.

Reader Tone

Mixed but tending towards the dark side in the details despite a broadly optimistic overarching historical sweep.

Focus

Interspecies Relations in a major theme, specifically the existence and behaviour of the Society of Contemporary Races. Most stories are directly or indirectly concerned with this theme.
Religious Influence. How do different mystical thought patterns influence behaviour, particularly how might alien thought patterns differ from examples we have in existing human culture.
Technology Influence. What possiblities are opened up by new technologies and how do they affect history and behaviour?
