The Garden Temple of the Witch Kings

Travel as far as you are able across the Sun Sea along The Shifting Line, and you will come to the bustling city of Komak. To the north and into the most desolate corner of the Sun Sea, foolhardy and grossly overconfident adventures may stumble across the former seat of power for the entire region; The Sacred Temple of Mouchi-leh, or as it was more commonly known: The Garden Temple of Witch Kings.   In its day, it sat as an alabaster palace fitted in a ring of green that was itself surrounded by the ancient city of Ko. All three are now in ruins, bereft of culture or citizens. For those who wish to find this place, the abandoned road north from Komak will serve as the first and only marker. Beyond that lies the most chaotic part of the Sun Sea. The eastern end of the Pendalat Mountains turns northward suddenly before continuing east and sat above Ko like a hood, causing all manner of unpredictable weather in this region.   Water is difficult to come by in this region save when the storms come. Typhoons will make landfall in the Jungles of Meola, and will then press inland to emerge onto the barren lands and empty their contents onto the parched ground which in turn floods suddenly, unable to take all the moisture in. Ancient riverbeds will spring to like with a roar as debris and a churned slurry of muddy water appear without warning from a storm venting its fury 100 leagues north. To hear these floods coming is to hear deaths arrival. After such events, the desert will blossom for a day or two before the Sun Sea once again sequesters all the moisture deep within it's bones.   The normal winds driven in from the Jungles of Meola are quickly depleted of any moisture and roasted over the baking sands. Cupping along The Hood, they create a kind of vortex around the former palace. Sand storms can arise quickly and without warning. The Witch Kings seems to either know how to keep themselves at the eye of the storms by insightful planning or plain magic as the palace and the surrounding city were never harmed by these powerful forces of nature.   Beyond the floods from the jungle's rainy season, and around the intermittent sandstorms live a very scarce and strangely aggressive wildlife that calls the desert home. They have learned over the ages not to call the ruins of the palace or Ko home.   Beyond the walls of wind that can scour bones smooth, lies the outer rim of the ancient city of Ko. Much of it has been worn down by the elements over the centuries but the buildings closest to the palace walls still hold their shape and in many cases clearly identify their purposes. Slave pens, blacksmiths, craftsmen of all sorts ringed the garden walls to provide for the mercantile needs of the Witch Kings.   Nothing should grow in such a place, but the gardens have thrived in the absence of the caretakers. Tiered levels of greenery run in disjointed circles around the ivory towers that make up the garden grounds. It is said that the Witch Kings sank deep wells into the very bones of the desert to take back the water it had claimed. That water manifests itself in fountains, pools and a verdant life that is unheard of in this region. The catalog of plants maintained by the Witch Kings was legendary throughout their age, and while untended, they still bear fruit and produce their blossoms in season. Whether this is by long cast magic of the past, or ingenious and meticulous planning remains a mystery.
