Mouraine Mountain Region (m-oor-r-ei-n)

The Mouraine Mountain Region is an area of hills and rocky hills surrounding the lone mountain and adjoining city-state of Mount Mouraine.   The area's is some grassland with many hills and rocky outcrops. Large tracks of land are cleared for agriculture that support the city, along with surrounding towns and villages. The hills and rocky outcrops offer ample opportunity for prospecting and the mining of various materials. Several towns surrounding the mountain are based on a combination of agriculture and mining operations. These towns directly support the city of Mount Mouraine with goods and materials.   The dominant feature of the region is a large, lone mountain in the center of the region. The mountain was named for the family which settled at its base. Their settlement would soon grow into the city for which the area is now known. The city begins at the southern base of the mountain and is built in a set of tiers that spiral up and around it to the west and north. The highest tier sits about halfway to the peak of the mountain directly above the lowest tier.   The hills and rocky outcrops in the area also hide a number of marked and unmarked caves, dungeons, grottos, and old dwellings. Due to their rocky nature many of these have survived the passage of time largely intact. Most of these locations lie abandoned, used for nefarious purposes, or home to monstrous creatures. These locations are largely separated from the populated areas of the region and only occasionally cause the locals trouble. It is common for people or creatures fleeing pursuit in the neighboring kingdoms to seek refuge in these places as they are unlikely to be pursued across the borders. However, they do not go very long without being discovered by the city and eventually dealt with.   The area shares borders with several other Kingdoms. Due to the political climate between Mount Mouraine and its neighbors there is little to no contact between the people and governments. The borders with Mount Mouraine and its region are carefully watched and closely guarded by its neighbors. There are several gate towns, fortresses, and guard structures mark these borders. The neighboring kingdoms maintain active garrisons in these locations. Due to the history between Mount Mouraine and its neighbors the other kingdoms seldom allow travelers to leave the region unless they have passed thorough checks and tests.
