Shimizu Aki
Aki Shimizu (清水 暁, Shimizu Aki, born June 6, 1960) is a Japanese musician, songwriter and DJ. She is from Osaka.
She has reached moderate success in Japanese pop music in late 1970s and early 1980s, where she was largely associated with the Japanese city pop genre. Two of her songs (Kibo no doko ka ni - Somewhere Over the Hope and Kudasai - Give, Give, Give!) were ranked on Oricon charts. Internationally, some of her translated songs were popular with the golden age of Cantopop. In 1984, she went on and extended break, taking a break from touring to spend more time travelling. After a five-years hiatus, she begun recording again, this time from the east coast of USA, associating herself with mostly underground electronic music movements, ranging from early house, EBM to industrial techno.
Shimizu has studied visual art at Kyoto University of Art and Design before starting her music career. While her music originally focused on range of popular styles like soft rock and funk, her post-hiatus musical creation was more progressive. She has dabbled with acid house music, releasing a mixtape titled Dripping Tar. She gradually moved through progressive electronic styles ranging from post-punk to industrial techno. Since 1998, she performs under stage name Apostasia. Her sound has been characterised by fusion of dark ambient sounds with hard rhytms and haunting vocals.
Despite her previously public career and lifeas a pop idol, Shimizu has been quoted saying, "I have very few people that I call my friends and as equally few that I trust. Besides the party, I have no interest in sharing my personal life with the world. But then again, what am I if not the life of party?"
