Kataque Archipelago

The Kataque is a place of mystery, colloquially referred to as  "the Lost World". Stories abound regarding the myriad islands that make up the archipelago, but little in the way of recorded fact is known.   Tales tell of thick jungle that hides huge lost temples to unknown gods, strange giant lizards that hunt in deep chasms, and unknown tribes of humanoids that have little patience for visitors.   Captains who have sailed close to the shores tell of huge flocks of brightly coloured parrots,  swooping lizard-birds, and large biting insects. Seemingly untouched by time or civilisation, the archipelago is home to many diverse and unique lifeforms, including several varieties of intelligent carnivorous plants.   The jungles of the archipelago seem to encourage gigantism amongst its inhabitants. Trees commonly grow to 350 feet in height, and much of the native wildlife is huge in size compared to that encountered in the west.   There is a single port on the archipelago, called Pazandar, that was an attempt to settle and serve as a base for exploration some 50 years ago. It was quickly abandoned however, and the few wooden buildings lie there still, overgrown and weathered, and a warning to passing vessels that the Kataque Archipelago is not for taming.   Despite all this, the promise of huge riches and resources on the archipelago still tempts foolhardy captains to plan expeditions to the islands from time to time.
