Illithid Species in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Illithid

Dark whispers in shadowy places tell of an ancient race, older by far than The Great Deluge, older even than the Antediluvians themselves.   Where they came from none know, though it was not from this world. They travelled from the ancient past across the far reaches of the planes of existence, and wherever they went they enslaved others to feed their appetites.   Their greatest appetite is said to be the brains of sentient beings, which they consume greedily whilst their victims are still living. This trait is what gives the Illithid the name by which they are more commonly referred - Mind Flayers.   Standing taller than most humans, Illithid are said to be thin with long limbs of slime covered violet skin. Their elongated bald heads are said to be reminiscent of an octopus, with a cluster of four flexible, unsegmented, extendable, purplish-black tentacles surrounding their mouths.   Legend tells that the Illithid can read and project thoughts in the minds of others, and even enslave them, enforcing coercive control over their victims.   What the ultimate aim of the Illithid is remains a mystery. Rumours of controlling Elder Brains that rule over Mind Flayer societies persist, but their purpose is as unfathomable as their alien minds.

Illithid around the Azure Sea

As far as anyone knows there are no Illithid living around The Azure Sea, and for that civilisation should be grateful. What little is known of these alien slave-masters is surmised from ancient texts and carvings.
