Ham Barleywain Character in The Azure Sea | World Anvil

Ham Barleywain

Ham Barleywain is a young peasant boy of Saltmarsh who washes pots at a local inn, The Snapping Line, and is on good terms with the landlady, Hanna Rist.   An anxious ten-year-old, he lives in the harbour district of the town with his mother, who makes fish pies for the dock workers. He’s often found fishing on the jetty, when not working at The Snapping Line.   Ham hangs around with a group of friends, affectionately known around the town as the The Five Hellions due to their seemingly magnetic attraction to trouble. They are looked on with affection by the townsfolk, despite their constant trouble-making.   The Hellions can commonly be found hanging around town and comprise Ham, Telmay Pelt, Yenry Downcreek, Marni Wolfsmith and Fipp Arroway. Ham is their unofficial leader by mutual consent, mainly due to his gift for thinking up crazy schemes and also being able to provide a ready supply of fish pies via his mother.

Appearance and Mannerisms

Ham has blue eyes, a mass of straw-colored curls, and his plump features give him a cherubic look. His cheeks flush bright red when he’s excited or agitated.   There appears to be an almost unending stream of snot running from his pink nose.

Notable Achievements

Ham and the The Five Hellions are infamous around Saltmarsh for their pranks. Last year they managed to give many of the dockworkers severe stomach troubles for three days after they sneaked some alchemical compounds they had stolen into Ham's mother's fish pies! The incident is still referred to around the docks as "the Brown Weekend"!

Ham is a young boy who works at the Snapping Line. He is always getting himself and his friends into trouble.
