Devyabytyvy (Deh-vyah-bit-tee-vee)

A Kobzar ballad concerning the Battle of Belazitza and the founding of the Caecus. The name means "9th defeat".   The ballad tells of the defeat of the Nazvan soldiers at the city of Belazitza, on the Nazvan-Nihellad border. This seige had already played out eight times and the ruler of Belazitza, King Berephori had grown deeply tired of the city changing hands. And so on the ninth siege he led his armies to maneuver and encircle the attackers, focing their surrender capturing them almost to a man. The victorious defenders the separated the captured Nazvan soldiers into groups of 81. Of each group of prisoners, 80 were blinded and one left with a single eye.   The caecus were formed by the Nazvan Kingdoms after this, with these blinded soldiers refusing to give up their arms and waste their training. In the many battles that followed, those that survived eventually became an elite fighting force, passing their knowledge and skills down between generations.
