Caecus (kai-ey-kus)

Blind, and wearing smooth, featureless helmets, these heavy Imperial infantry traditionally wield a tuned tower shield and short spear.   The blind legionaries were the most formidible and feared units of the Caminid Empire, and many victories are attributed to the efficacy of the smooth-helms. Now in the Pontisine) armies, fewer and fewer caecus units are being seen, as they require an extraordinary amount of support in a skirmish. Many ex-caecus have turned to banditry, often lead by Nazvan Kobzars rather than their traditional monoklops ennturian.   A kobzar ballad titled "Devyabytyvy" ("the 9th defeat") tells that the first caecus were formed by the Nazvan Kingdoms after the Battle of Belazitza, wherein the victorious Nihellad defenders serparated the captured Nazvan soldiers into groups of 100. Of each 100 prisoners, 99 were blinded and one left with a single eye. Since Nazva was conquered and Nihellada absorbed into the Caminid empire, the units became an central part of the Caminid legions. Caecus were and are often drawn from the Nazvan territory due to the high prevalence of congenital blindness, though their officers, the "one eyed men" or monoklops are often from a different region or even territory to the soldiers.
