The Goblinoid Race

Born from the Chaos, Goblinoids are a race of closely related humanoids also known as goblins, not to be confused with the particular variety of the same name. Notable examples of the goblinoids included but are not limited to, the goblins, hobgoblins, and bugbears. Goblinoids do not have a written language as some suggest an air of superstition to it or phobia.   Description   Goblinoids have typical humanoid anatomy, though their skin tone and texture are often somewhere between that of a human and a snail. The notable exception of this rule is the bugbears whose entire bodies are covered head to toe in thick fur. Heights varied greatly among different species of goblinoids, ranging from 3 to 7 feet (0.91 to 2.1 meters). The build of goblinoids is usually thick and muscular, with their faces possessing similar attributes. Their appearance is often regarded as repulsive. Goblinoids who wield magic are done so via channeling through worship of Chaos or demons and they will take advantage of whatever magic they can find and is easy to use.   Habitats and Habits   Goblins prefer temperate plains as their prime habitat but reside in easily accessible caves, shadowy ruins, and caverns with rickety bridges. They do not do a lot of mining themselves and prefer to steal metal tools and weapons from other races. This is why they will attempt to live near other races' settlements so they might continue to sneak in and steal from them. Farming communities seem to be their favorite targets. Caves and caverns of twisted corridors will lead to a centralized opened chamber where nesting grounds can be found. Pustules of soured soil and fungal growths birth forth young goblins as when goblins gather in an area, Chaos grows and a nest soon develops. They have no real concept of privacy or honor. The young are raised cruelly and must engrain within their psyche to take advantage of anything they can to get ahead. The attrition rate of 'children/offspring' is extremely high but rapid birthing keeps their numbers high and ensures the strong survive. Maggots and mold are spices to them and food without such to accompany it is considered bland and tasteless. Plagues and bacteria seem to have little to no effect on many goblins and they can survive such easily.   Personality   The typical goblinoid is lewd, cruel-hearted, cowardly, sadistic, greedy, curious, power-hungry (or in the case of goblins just plain hungry), extremely lacking in any intelligence or sophistication, and proud of it. Goblins love revenge and take delight in inflicting it. Known for their habit of abusing those (at least by their reckoning) lesser than them, and worshiping those greater than them, goblinoids are not popular amongst other races. While exceptions do exist (though none are noted, as an atypical goblinoid rarely makes it out of its clan alive), most goblinoids on the coast match the ethical description.   Combat and Tactics   Goblins are stealthy, skulking, ambush predators, are natural masters of guerilla warfare, and swallow their opponents in sheer numbers with mob/swarm tactics. Sharpened sticks and jagged stones are common to their weaponry. No goblin will fight without four to five others to support them with superior numbers to overwhelm. Goblins will leave simplistic pits and spike traps everywhere indiscriminately though they do not set up warnings of these traps and can become victims of their own. Leaders are typically hobgoblins or bugbears, larger races cowing those weaker and smaller goblin tribes. Outcaste orcs can also be found in a cushy position as a leader. Leaders have to always be on guard though for backstabbing or poisoning from a power-hungry goblinoid.   Relations   Goblinoids rarely get along with themselves better than their enemies, though they are known to come together under a common cause on occasion. Goblinoids do have allies in the worgs and sometimes ogres of the sort but these relationships can be considered tentative at best as long as it is mutually beneficial. Hierarchy is usually determined by whoever would win in a fight, and it is not uncommon for them to find out through physical methods. To goblinoid thinking, elves and dwarves are particularly nasty arch-enemies, humans are things to kill if possible and run from if not, and halflings are perfect targets. Goblinoids are cannibalistic in the sense they will consume other goblinoids from other tribes. As long as it can provide some sense of nourishment it can be considered on the menu.   History and Recent Events   The various goblinoid races are believed to be the second natives to the Arbour Coast. Living in the ruins of the previous natives (believed to be a sort of shapeshifting merfolk), the goblinoids were ruled over by a mix of war chief goblins, brute force bugbears, and military savvy hobgoblins. Over time, hobgoblin war councils formed and tribal lines of warlords were drawn out. Internal fighting surely would have brought the strongest to the forefront but the presence of the elves and dwarves soon gave the goblinoids a new target.   Minor skirmishes against the elves and dwarfs were not uncommon but were not a serious threat until around 1990s were a united front was established and aggressive assaults took place against the elven kingdoms. This would continue until the early 2000s when the elven population swung back and cracked the backbone of the goblin front.   In time, the presence of humans on the coastline gave the goblinoids a new target. In the 2300s, humans attempted a sort of treaty with the goblinoids that utterly failed. The Green Conflict soon followed and ultimately the goblinoid hordes were pushed back once again. Continuous minor conflicts would take place until the warlord hobgoblins were pushed to the north into The Burnt Peaks. The vast majority of goblinoid tribes and clans in the valley now are led by bugbear brute enforcers with the occasional goblin shaman.
