The Green Conflict

The goblinoid forces of the region had already suffered several loses in the previous centuries against the elven kingdom of Shelthemar. The counter assault the elves staged in 2030 TA had deterred the goblinoids from frontal assaults and their tactics evolved to ambush assaults. These attacks were limited but continuous successes on dwarven and halfling communities along trade routes would cause a treaty between the two races to be signed for protection of the roads and one another. Not discouraged, the goblinoids continued with minimal success up to the arrival of human settlements in 2324 TA. This provided a new target.   Conflict between humanoids and goblinoids in the valley were reaching an all-time high. With previous efforts to appease the goblinoids through diplomatic means failing, it was only a matter of time before a boiling point would be hit. This point was reached during a particular guerrilla ambush where a noble's son during his first expedition would end up dead. The outrage that followed would see an influx of weaponry and troops flood into the valley from the parent kingdom of the human settlements. The military campaign that humans would come to call "The Green Conflict" began in the early spring of 2328 TA. Several military outposts would be established on both sides and battles would commence in brutal conflicts. The humans sought early on to unite the forces of the valley to a united cause early on and while the elven kingdom declined the dwarven and halfling population joined in the effort later on. A formal treaty was drawn up about a year later in 2334 TA with the demihumans but by then the conflict had been raging on. By 2338 TA, the conflict was decided and much of the remaining goblinoid commanding forces were routed and crushed. Fragments of the hobgoblin commanders fled to the mountains to lick their wounds. The remaining goblinoid forces were scattered in the valley to tribal statuses and with no decisive leadership. They remain a minor threat to this day, keeping to the outskirts of rural roads at best with a bugbear or goblin chieftain.   Timeline:
  • 2328 TA:
A group of noble merchants were traveling through the valley when they were ambushed by a raiding party of goblins. The goblins killed several of the merchants, including one of the most influential and wealthy ones. The news of the attack spread quickly throughout the human settlements, causing outrage and grief among the people.
  • 2329 TA:
In an attempt to find a peaceful solution to the conflict, human envoys were sent to negotiate with the hobgoblin leaders who were in charge of the goblin forces. However, the negotiations failed, and the hobgoblins demanded unreasonable terms, including the surrender of large territories and the payment of tribute.
  • 2330 TA - 2335 TA:
Over the next several years, there were many bloody conflicts between the human forces and the goblins. The battles were often brutal and fierce, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. While the humans managed to win some battles, the goblins more often than not came out on top, pushing further into human settlements. Notable conflicts included:   The Battle of Blackthorn Pass - In the third year of the conflict, the goblinoid forces launched a surprise attack on a human supply train as it passed through the narrow Blackthorn Pass. The human soldiers guarding the train fought valiantly but were eventually overwhelmed by the goblinoids. The battle resulted in a significant loss of supplies and equipment for the human forces.   The Siege of Highcliff - In the fourth year of the conflict, a large goblinoid force led by a particularly cunning hobgoblin laid siege to the fortress of Highcliff, a strategic location on the edge of human territory. The human defenders held out for several weeks but were eventually forced to surrender when the goblins breached the walls. The hobgoblin leader, known as Klarg the Ruthless, became notorious for his brutal tactics during the siege.   The Skirmish at Greywater Crossing - In the fifth year of the conflict, a small company of goblinoids attempted to cross the shallow river at Greywater Crossing, which was heavily guarded by human soldiers. The goblinoids were able to slip past the initial defenses but were ambushed by a group of halfling archers hiding in the nearby woods. The skirmish ended in a decisive victory for the human and halfling forces.   The Battle of Ironwood Grove - In the sixth year of the conflict, the goblinoids attempted to capture the valuable Ironwood Grove, a forested area that was essential for the human war effort. The human forces, led by a skilled general named Sir Roland, engaged the goblinoids in a fierce battle among the trees. The battle lasted for two days, with both sides suffering heavy losses, but ultimately the human forces were able to drive the goblinoids back.   The Raid on Firestone Keep - In the seventh year of the conflict, a group of goblinoids led by a powerful bugbear chief launched a raid on the town of Firestone Keep, which was a major hub of human trade and commerce. The goblinoids burned and pillaged the town, causing widespread panic and destruction. The human forces were eventually able to drive the goblinoids back, but the raid had a significant impact on the local economy and morale of the people.
  • 2336 TA:
The Rampart Concord was signed between the human forces, the halflings, and the dwarves. This alliance helped to turn the tide of the war, as the dwarves provided valuable weapons and armor, while the halflings provided skilled scouts and trackers.
  • 2337 TA:
In a decisive battle, the hobgoblin leader, Evlad the Giant, was defeated by the human forces. This victory gave the humans momentum to push back against the goblinoid forces, causing many of them to retreat into The Burnt Peaks.
  • 2338 TA:
Scouts reported a complete withdrawal of the hobgoblin-led forces into The Burnt Peaks, causing the goblinoid forces to scatter throughout the valley in small tribes and groups led by bugbear chiefs or other goblin leaders. While goblins still remained a threat, they were no longer led by the powerful hobgoblin commanders, causing a significant decrease in their overall strength and power. The conflict had finally come to an end, and the valley was left to rebuild and recover from the damage caused by the long and brutal war.

The Conflict

Battlefield

Most of the conflicts that took place were fought in guerrilla ambush tactics from both sides. Those battles that took place in the open tended to yield much higher casualties to each force.   Much of the goblinoids favored aggression and brute force combined with superior numbers. Those led by hobgoblin commanders were considered particularly troubling as they were highly paranoid and always on the defense to look for advantages. One of the favored formations a hobgoblin would command has at least four ogres of various utilization. Ogre howdahs were a particular vile troop, capable of carrying several goblin artillery that launched volleys of missiles together on one target for maximum effect. Mounted combat in the goblinoid forces would see various animals, some trained better than others. Wolves were simple enough to train and were considered the majority of their cavalry. Giant boars, giant spiders, and worgs were uncommon and those riding the beasts could be recognized as having a higher station than the others.
